Cyclic vomiting syndrome and asthma

My 8 year old daughter has recently been diagnosed with cyclic vomiting syndrome. She has had several endoscopy's showing chronic gastritis, gastroparesis, non-specific inflammation, nodules, and chronic reflux. First they thought she just had reflux, but meds did not help. Then they thought a bad virus had caused the inflammations in her stomach and left her with chronic. For 2 1/2 years they have treated her with several proton pump inhibitors, reglan, carafate, and so on, but have never been ablet o really put their finger on what is causing this.

This past Friday, her school contacted me saying she was having difficulty breathing. We immediately took her to a specialist and she has now been diagnosed with moderate asthma, but really has not shown any signs of asthma until now.

Just wondering if anyone has heard of CVS and is there any correlation to the asthma!

So sorry to hear about your daughter's problems. I have no knowledge of CVS, but I do know that gastritis and reflux can definitely lead to asthma. I suffered from severe asthma for years, and a major cause was my uncontrolled GERD. As my reflux got progressively worse, so did my asthma. PPI's did not control my GERD enough to prevent my asthma symptoms. My asthma got worse and worse, until I was taking nebulizer treatments at least twice a day for a year.

Finally, I took my doctor's advice, and had the Nissen Fundoplication surgery on February 27th. This has made a HUGE difference in my asthma. My lungs are much better, and were noticeably improved shortly after the surgery.

I hope your daughter's problems improve soon.

Hi eignaef,

Have any of the doctors taken biopsies of her stomach and looked for eosinophils? I'm asking because it is possible that she may have Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis as a cause of the reflux, the gastroparesis, and the CVS. There are treatments available. Check out http://www.apfed.org/ for more info.

BTW, my Husband has Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis and he never had Asthma until his Eos. Gastroenteritis symptoms started... And research has shown there to be a correlation between allergic inflammation in the airway (Asthma) and Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disorders.

My 14 year old daughter also has cyclic vomiting syndrome. She takes Prevacid for her reflux and has chronic sinusitis/sinus problems and that lead to sinus infections. She often feels unwell in general, just kind of weak and general malaise. I wish I knew what the root of her problems are so she could just feel normal. It seems to me that the reflux causes the sinus issues....just not positive about it. She cycles every 3 months and is sick for two days. Lorazapam and Zofran help reduce the amount of vomiting.
