For the past six days I've had family guests in my home for Christmas. They know I have allergies, but don't care! smhair

I've wheezed and coughed and choked all the time.

Sunday, my niece brought a smoking boyfriend! Thank goodness he smoked only outside, but it still clung to him. skull

My other niece (age 11) decided not to bath the whole visit (3 days) but to cover herself in perfume to keep from smelling. Her mom teaches her weird things, like not bathing but every seven days. rolleyes

My other brother and his family love colonges and perfumes! mad   Even their soap is highly perfumed making it impossible for me to enter the bathroom after one of them bath.   skull   They stayed for four days! nono

I have to avoid everyone of these things to keep my lungs calm and now it's all in my house. shocked

Today it was so bad I had to walk around with a mask on to keep from passing out from the fumes. skull

I was so glad to see them go today.  smilewinkgrin     I just hope the fumes will eventually get out by the vents and air cleaner soon.

Oh Glory, Joy! What a mess. Make your New Year's resolution to not do that again! Go visit one of THEM, and stay in a motel. I'm just glad you didn't end up in a hospital!! A mask won't help unless it's got a face seal and canister filter.

I hope it's warm enough for you to air out your house. At least run the exhaust fans, maybe the attic fan too if it has a switch. Try washing everything, scrubbing carpets and changing furnace filters.

I had three sons, two wives from Christmas Day until today, the other son, wife and 3 kids live next door. I had tons of cooking and laundry, but they used my odorless soap and shampoo and don't use perfumes and colognes. I'll take the extra work over the smell.

Only thing I can say is to open the windows and try to get the fresh air in, to let
all the perfume out...maybe go and stay the night at a hotel, like the other
mentioned or maybe next year ask your relatives to stay at a hotel, geezee they need to
consider you and how hard we try to keep from getting sick, they need to have compassion or
to stay home...Maybe ask Miss. Manners what to do in this situation, to keep it from
happening again...

I found out they also used dryer sheets in my dryer last night. My dryer's exhaust is next to my heat/air conditioner unit so when the dryer was turned on later today, the leftover fumes from the dryer sheets pumped right into the house! skull skull
My house stinks of dryer sheets along with the smell of all of the perfumes!
I take a daily dose of zyertec every morning, but tonight I had to throw in a dose of benadryl to stop my mouth from itching.

It's too cold to air out my house, we've still go snow on the ground in places. Also, cold air sets my asthma off.
I'm going to take a dose of ventolin and go to bed. Maybe my CPAP can filter some of the odors tonight.

PS. They all live far away and can't afford motels. So them staying in a motel is impossible. I can't afford to go to their homes, either. I have plenty of hypoallergenic soaps, shampoos, and detergents available for them to use, but they want to use their "smelly" stuff.

Besides, it's once a year they come. Thank goodness. wink

I think I'd start saving a little at a time as a New Year's resolution to go visit them. I'm hurting so bad this morning, from just doing laundry yesterday and not even remaking beds, that I'm seriously considering visiting one of my sons next Christmas. One will have a 6-month old, so he's the prime target. I'm considering a motel even though he has spare rooms, just so I'll have an excuse to go to bed early.

open a couple of windows and go shopping or just out to a Starbucks.

At the very least make up a letter to send early, before the motley crew comes to visit, that you cannot tolerate any perfumes or scents - doctors' orders - and they can come must must use only the soaps and cleaners you provide. Tell them you'll have to ask them to wash off any scents and wash any clothes that contain smoke smells. If they get angry, that's their problem. You need to survive!

I wish I could open my windows. They are painted shut. I live in a 100 yr old house and the windows haven't open in 50 plus years. :(
We have storm windows over the old windows for insulation purposes.
I've been running the house exhaust vents trying to suck out the fumes.

I'm still wheezing some, but it's calming down.

I'll tell "smelly" brother and his family to not use their smell goodies next year.

Do you have an attic exhaust fan that you can turn on with a switch? I use mine and pull down the attic stairs a little when something has stunk up the house. (Guys drinking beer, eating cheese ..)

Nope, no attic fan. Just the air conditioner vents, bathroom vent, and kitchen stove vent.
It's getting better, now.

Joy they should be more accomidating to your health problems.....the smelly stuff not acceptabvle IMHO.....One time could be 1 time too many & cause a bigger problem for you..........Guess I'm a grouch,lol......If I had that problem It would be gone in a heartbeat.If they didn't like it TOUGH!!!!

I'm the middle child in a large family and I've always been the peacemaker. My tongue has severe bite marks. :)
Almost everyone of my brothers and sister just gloss over my health problems. As a child I was accident prone and always getting hurt. They thought of my as a hypocondract (sp?) as a child. Now I have to show them my x-rays and doctor's reports to prove to them I really have these problems.
The only one who has sympthy for me allergywise is my oldest brother. He's worse than me.

that's the way it is joy, nobody believes us until it happens to them. too bad about the windows. i always leave mine open year round. even in the summer which i hate i open them up when it cools down.

there is nothing better than air for breathing.
