peptic ulcer disease and allergies

Hello,

I have had peptic ulcer disease and asthma as separate conditions for some time now. However, recently I have been having them together all the time. my body starts itching,I start having terrible pains in the epigstrium, my eyelids gets swollen and I start wheezing. a combination of seretide inhaler, ranitidine and omeprazole tablets prescribed by my doctor does not help. What do I do?

I'd suggest consulting an Allergist. These things you are describing sound a lot like an allergic reaction to something. Ulcers create weak spots in the lining of the stomach, which makes it easier for food particles to be absorbed into the bloodstream.

Once this happens, the immune system can recognize these food particles and become "sensitized" to them, and then whenever you eat the same foods, you can have allergic reactions (itching, swelling, asthma are all known allergy symptoms) to the food.

You can test this theory by trying an antihistamine such as Benadryl when you experience these symptoms and see if the Benadryl helps any.

An Allergist can help figure out what is triggering your symptoms if they are caused by an allergic reaction, and then the Allergist can help you with treatment options.

Is the pain constant or just when you eat? Is it with every meal or do you think you may have specific food triggers?

If it's constant you might want to get checked out by a cardiologist, even if it comes and goes it's often a good idea to rule out cardiac problems first.

A gastroenterologist might want you to get a barium swallow for epigastric pains. It can show if you have a hiatal hernia or reflux happening.

My allergist had me keep a food journal (find more info using search box at top of page) because I could tell that certain foods seemed to trigger reflux and pain.

Razzle has mentioned trying antihistamines, etc.
