I've been hoping to hear a good report about your little one now

and I do hope that she is feeling 100% better after her doctor

prescribed antibiotics for her infection.

The fact that she's had the antibiotics now means that the infection she had is clearing up, but if it is an intolerance or sensitivity to something (as I feel it almost certainly is, although we aren't doctors and can't diagnose, we can tell you  what we have experienced with our own child) it's going to build again.

I've looked at the Lactose free milk containers and the Lactaid milk containers and they contain all the vitamin D and calcium that the child needs. The milk is just lacking in lactose (milk sugar). Did you by chance give her cow's milk when she was under a year old? Infants are never supposed to have cow's milk during the first year of life. (I didn't know that; my daughter had to teach me!)

My daughter insists that cow's milk is perfect for calves, but not for humans.  Her children were given a soy based product after nursing was stopped. Now (at ages 3 and almost 6 years) I think they do permit their children to have milk, but they watch the sugar like a hawk!

I read last night an article by Dr. Weil (do you know whom I talking about?  He is a well known M.D. who offers advice on the internet and serves patients of his own in his area.

Dr. Weil suggests that milk is a strong mucus builder and if it is at all possible individuals should not use it. (He wasn't speaking about infants, but it is possible to find a soy based milk that is good for children that might not affect your little one as it has been---if that's what it is.

If she shows any signs of its getting difficult again, particularly with a cough, watery eyes or rubbing of the eyes and nose, please get to work on the milk thing first and then the dust mite thing next.

Finally, and this is the thing that doctors may ultimately say to you "she has to build her immunities; so we don't want to give her too many antibiotics while she's building her immunities." (They don't suggest antibiotics nearly as much in these days as they did some years ago.) Antibiotics have no effect on a virus; giving the antibiotic just helps with a bacterial infection that may result from the virus side effects.

Good morning, Lu2011,

I'm so glad she's getting along better now. I would try very hard to
see that the nursery has Lactaid milk for her for the next 2 weeks at least. You will know by then fully if it's the milk sugar that's the cause. (Can you take a couple of quarts by the nursery center and ask that they keep them in the fridge for your child? Label them for your youngster. They should be able to comply with that.)

I don't know about the yogurt, Lu2011. It often has milk sugar in it and that's what you are trying to avoid. Try a small amount of (lactose free) cheese without the yogurt and see how she gets along. If you can get lactose free yogurt, maybe she can manage that.

I don't enjoy seeing youngsters use an artificial sweetener because that can have upsets in their little systems--they upset grownups as well.

Let the words LACTOSE FREE be part of your shopping menu for her if you can. The nursery will co-operate with you, I feel sure.

Observe how she feels; is she still her playful, happy little self?

If so, that's good.  Your aim is to keep her that way, of course, and

to help  her to build her immune system so that she can avoid many of the viruses that happen in the nursery. 

Remember that her system can convert carbohydrates to the obtain all the glucose she needs for full functioning.

You're right again. Keep trying to lower the level of lactose in her diet; she will steadily improve if that is the problem.

There is another post on this forum by a grandmother whose grandson has a milk intolerance, too. If you have a chance, please read that post and see what her daughter discovered about her son. It's strikingly similar to your daughter in some ways. (I think it's called 2-year old's milk allergy.)
