4 year old asthma/allergy management

My daughter is 4 and has had a few life threatening asthma attacks in the past year. I have had 2 different appointments with asthma and allergy specialists that have totally different treatment plans. Our dr we have used since she was 2 wants to stop her Flovent and claritin in July for the summer and start back up in September. After having a severe asthma attack in te middle of the night 2 weeks ago we are afraid to stop it.


My 1 year old was jut diagnosed with asthma and hospitalized twice this month so we needed to see an asthma specialist now and our doctor was booked so we got a second opinion for the 4 year old too.

He wants to increase her Flovent 110mcg to 2 puffs twice daily and continue her on claritin.

Can anyone tell me what their asthma care plan is? I hate that the doctors have such opposite views on controlling her asthma

I take a daily management medicine plus an antihistimine. If I experience asthma I take albuterol spray. If I'm still not better I do my nebulizer treatment. If still having issue I go to urgent care for another treatment and a steroid shot.
I take medicine all year round.

Do you have a peak flow meter to know her danger levels?

You need to stay with the new doctor. He sounds well informed.

Have you allergy proof your home?
No pets
dust covers on beds and pillows
Wash sheets in hot water
limit scents in the house: candles, cleaners, perfumes
No smoking allowed- at all
No carpeting
keep bathroom mold free
Air out closets regularly

As a child to early teen my son suffered from asthma. Not as severe as your children - his was more of the cough variant variety but there were times he had to use his emergency inhaler.

When he was younger, he used Albuterol (with a spacer) and Clariten. But as he got older and it became a bit worse, he was on Singulair, Allegra, Advair and Albuterol as his rescue.

Up until this point she has been managed pretty well. Nothing has change with her routine or in our house. They said allergies get worse as you get older so I guess it's just that.
We have mostly wood floors in our house and they just recommended that we have mattress and pillow covers in her room. We have a dog that doesn't set off her allergies but other peoples dogs do. He is well groomed and we sweep the floors daily and have just purchased allergen trucking sprays for the couch an area rugs.

Just to give you a bit of hope. My son is now 20 and is not on any medications for his allergies OR asthma. He is doing very well and has been for at least 2 years.

The doctor did warn me that she will get worse before she gets better but I'm glad to hear that most kids grow out of it! Two sick kids all the time is killing me. My husband and I are just waiting for the next attack to happen after 3 weekends in a row of attacks:(

I totally understand! My son and daughter are 4 years apart (they are now 20 and 16). While he was suffering with his allergies and asthma, my daughter was dealing with SEVERE allergies. I had two sick children to deal with for at least 18 years. So I'm extremely grateful that they seem to be growing (grown) out of it.

When my son was born, he was always sickly. It wasn't until he was about 2 that he actually would sleep thru the night. His allergies were so severe that he would get constantly sick and make him miserable. Than he was diagnosed with asthma around the age of 3. And his DID get worse before it got better. Hang in there mommy!
