I have a 6 year old son who has in the last year developed coughing variant asthma. He also has ADHD. My problem is the medication/inhalers that they give him makes him 10 times as hyper as he usually is. He is getting into a lot of trouble in school do to his behavior. He was talking albuterol in the inhaler and nebulizer form. We tried switching him to a "less stimulating kind' which is xopenex in the inhaler and nebulizer form. This made him even worse!! I would like to know if anyone knows of any type of medication/inhalers that I might try using that will not trigger his ADHD. I feel so bad for him because he has to have the medication, but when he does it gets him into so much trouble in school. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have him on any medication for his ADHD? My son had cough variant asthma along with ADD/nonADHD so he didn't have the hyperactivity just the lack of focus. We had him on Singulair, Allegra, cough medications and Albuterol as his rescuer. And for his ADD he was on Adderall XR.

Yes he is on ADHD medicine along with Zyrtek, singular, and nasanex.

We are having similar issues with our 5 year old son- cough variant asthma ADHD symptoms (but he is too young to diagnose). After coming across the website above, we took him to be allergy tested the other day. He tested positive to a milk allergy. We were somewhat shocked. He will not drink milk but loves ice cream, yogurt, etc. I knew there was some link to his behavior and something he was ingesting...he would get super hyper and giddy out of nowhere...but I contributed it to too much sugar. Low and behold it was milk. Which I am realizing now is in EVERYTHING! No wonder the poor guy has been acting out! Even if a milk allergy is not a possibility for your son, you may want to look at the website.
