Do you use an air purifier? Need advice!

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone uses an air purifier in their bedroom to help with their asthma.   Ever since we’ve moved in we’ve been battling mould on the window frames, and frankly I am a horrible house keeper, so the dust usually is winning the whole battle for a clean/asthma friendly house.   My main questions are:   Have they helped you?   What kind do you use?   Can you recommend one that’s slim line (TINY unit, I have a foot between my bed and the wall…)?   Can you recommend one that runs very quietly so I can sleep with it on?   Thank you!

I attack the windows with Teatree oil every week (on average). I've also got an Ozkleen mould killer (bleach doesn't kill mould as much as it bleaches it into hiding) but it smells disgusting, so I only use it on the days I can have the house open. (I live in Melbourne, so we get maybe 3 days a year where it’s not stupidly hot, stupidly cold, stupidly windy, or stupidly wet… Some days we get all 4 within an hour.)

Unfortunately we're in a rental, and the landlord won't fix the windows. They're not very well sealed, but now I think about it most of the moister is probably coming from having two adults sleeping in such a small bedroom.
The biggest problem I have is dust coming in through the small gaps. It's like a little desert on my windowsill every few days, lol.

I'll defiantly look into a dehumidifier, it hadn't occurred to me.
Bit of luck it’ll help the room feel a bit less sticky on those hot nights as well.

We recently moved into a new townhome and got an air filter on our furnace like the one Alcie has described. Like her, we keep our fan running all the time. It helps distribute heat/cool and moves the air through the filter constantly.

That said, there are some higher quality air filters (more expensive) that you can buy for your regular furnace air filter requirement. It can't hurt, and will probably help you.

I told my allergy/asthma doc that I had a furnace filter, and he still wanted me to use an air purifier in my room in addition to the furnace filter. I like white noise, so it works for me. I've actually used one for years, but only have had the "deluxe" furnace filter for 3 years. Mine sits on a table top. Just go online and search for air purifiers, and you'll find a wide range of them. My allergist likes the ones that use an actual filter and isn't a fan of the electromagnetic ones with the blades to rinse.

Have you discussed the mold problem with your allergist? I remember quite some time ago (a different city and different allergist) that I was given a script for a mold inhibitor/remover that you mix with water and spray on the offending area. Give your doctor's office a call and see what they recommend for your windows.
