Question about an allergy.

Here's the deal. about a year ago I was eating out and ordered crab and shrimp. Not too long into my meal my throat and cheeks began to swell. Naturally I stopped eating, left, and chugged some Benadryl. The odd thing is that I have eaten both shrimp and crab on numerous occasions prior to this event and have never had a reaction. Since this happened I have tried shrimp again with no ill results, but I haven't tried crab yet. This weekend I'm going to karaoke night at a friends house and crab legs are on the menu. Should I try them? Is it possible that I was allergic to some sort of seasoning that was used?

Shrimp are treated right on the boat with sulfites to keep their color and stop spoilage. Sometimes this is not adequately washed off. Some people have a true allergic reaction to sulfites.

If you are not having a reaction to wine, beer, brown sugar, corn starch or other sulfited foods, this is unlikely to be your problem. You might want to consider going to an allergist for a skin test.
