First off I am a new member here..Ive had a few issues over the years that have gotten worse,stomach issues that no dr can seem to tell me what I have,cramping,nausea,constipation,diaherrea,gas,bloating also get bad migraines,I am adopted so family history isn't really available,but recently I did get a chance to talk to my older birth sister and found out that she and her son both have some food allergies.no specifics but she will be sending me a list of those,I now I had allergies when I was a kid to some foods,dust pollen mold etc.

Recently I noticed on my left ankle and calf my skin was getting scale look and feel to it and itched a lot,never really thought much about it.just figured it was dry skin,but with all of the issues ive had lately I am beginning to think its eczema from allergies,I have yet to be tested for allergies as an adult but am lining that up,I guess my question is would an allergy to food cause severe stomach issues? Has anyone had these same issues and had food allergies?

Hi JC Welcome to HealingWell, Have you seen a GI doctor yet about your stomach issues. I would get into a GI doctor to get it checked out.

Yes I have been to numerous GI docs..even spent a week at the Mayo Clinic..none of wich got me any solid results on what I have or don't have,Ive had all the scopes scans and tests done...after talking to my sister am now leaning towards possible food allergies...I had them when I was young but have been told they can come back through life especially after 30yrs old..of wich I am well past...lol..just been searching for answers...currently I take Metoproclomide,Pantaprozole,an Doc-Q-Lace for my stomach and Immitrex for my migraines.
I am allergic to pennicillen,arithromiacin,tetracyclene and amoxicillin..those I do know I am allergic to but foods I am un aware of any wich brings the question of stomach issues replated to food allergies?

Have you seen, among your multiple docs, an allergist?

If you think you have food allergies or intolerances you should keep a detailed food diary with time, foods, meds, drinks and symptoms. It takes a couple of months to compile this and it could help an allergist figure out what's going on.

Look up the many posts on "food diary" and "challenge testing" in the search box at the top of the page. Don't do the challenge testing unless you are under the care of an allergist and get his/her OK.

Watch out for muscle twitches with the metoclopramide! It's called tardive dyskinesia. I was on it for a while, 6 months, then suddenly got twitches in my face. It can be permanent.

Doc-Q-Lace is docusate. It contains sulfite. Sulfites can cause migraines and stomach problems. If you're getting diarrhea I wouldn't take it. It's for constipation, not diarrhea. I take Miralax instead for constipation - no gas and bloating.

Why are you taking the pantoprazole? Do you have GERD? Some people have reactions to this also.

Do you by chance have lactose intolerance? That causes gas, etc.

Have you been checked for Celiac? Chron's? IBS? Food intolerances? Drink intolerances? Migrains - have you considered a preventive migraine meds? I take a preventive med, and it helped me a lot. I once upon a time got 16-20 migraines a month, and with this preventive med, I get 3-4 every few months, which is a huge improvement. Sounds like a neurologist, gi, and allergiest would be great doctors to get with.

Hi JC,

I am sorry to read of your problems and struggles going on right now.

At Mayo, did you have the upper an lower endoscopies as well as any biopsy? Also did the Drs mention your gallbladder at all ?

Wish I had better advice for you but know I am thinking of you.

Medicine to lower stomach acid can actually increase the likelihood of becoming allergic to foods (because stomach acid is needed to break down proteins in foods, and it is proteins in foods that usually are involved with allergic reactions to foods).

As for what is up with your gut, most GI docs do not understand this sort of thing - symptoms without positive biopsy/lab/visible cause - and will tell you that it is IBS (doctor speak for "I Be Stumped").

A detailed food diary may help, as might a trial 3 months of a gluten-free diet.

And consider GMO foods as a possible contributor. I've heard others say they noticed a big improvement in their health when they stopped eating GMO's. The only known way right now to avoid GMO's is to eat 100% organic.

A Naturopathic or Integrative Physician may also be able to help.

Thanks everyone for the replies..did do testing for gallbladder upper/lower gi scopes etc..I take the Metoproclomide so I don't feel stuffed even after a very small meal..the Pantaprozole helps with the reflux I have..I get both the constipation and the diarrhea,its always a mix..and so hard to forecast wich its going to be..been tested for celiac/chrons and IBD/IBS..they just cant narrow it down..the only thing I haven't been tested for is the food allergies yet...hoping to get in for the testing in the next week or so..until then just keeping a food diary as suggested.
