Hello, all. I've been sulfite sensitive for five months now. I this been quite the learning process!

I've just been diagnosed with Graves, unfortunately, and was prescribed a beta blocker, propranolol. I just got it home, and it is a gelatin capsule that comes apart.

Would a gelatin capsule cause a reaction?!? Isn't gelatin sulfited?

Also, I have to take Benadryl for sulfite reactions (maybe once every two weeks), and a couple of sites say it might interact with the beta-blocker?

Worried to take it now! Thanks for any help.

Hi onelife.

There is only a minuscule amount of gelatin in the capsule shell. It shouldn't be anywhere near enough to trigger your sensitivity. Yes, gelatin is sulfited. It's pig skin and feet and snouts boiled in a SO2 bath. It takes me a small bowl of gelatin to get a reaction, or the amount in some products like some brands of yogurt.

Benadryl tablets should be OK. It's the liquid and capsules, with additives and coloring, that are problematic as far as containing sulfite. For more information on interaction you should talk with your doctor. Tell him what you've read! Take a paper copy of the manufacturer's information - should be available online.
