anyone else with antibiotic allergy?

I've just found out the hard way that I'm allergic to yet another antibiotic. I went in for hand surgery yesterday, and I had a reaction to the vancomycin they gave me. Red, hot, itchy and a little loopy. Today, I have red dots on the arm they had the IV in.

This isn't the first time this has happened either. I've reacted to keflex, doxycyline, amoxicillin, clindamycin and levaquin. Whenever I have to have a new antibiotic, I react to it within a few days. I'm just wondering if I should tell any doc I see that I should never have any antibiotics. Does anyone else have this issue with antibiotics?

I'm feeling incredibly wiped out and drained today, as usual after I react to something. Its just kind of annoying that the antibiotic reaction is bothering me more than the surgery.

Hi sayyadina.

At least a few of those drugs are know to cross-react. You should probably not have been given them.

Not all your antibiotics are listed, but several are. There are all sorts of other websites you might search to find information on cross-reactivity.

I think I would consult an allergist and get some solid information. Some family doctors and internists with a good chemistry background can be helpful too.

Make sure you print up a list of drugs you react to and keep them with you at all times. It could save your life. I keep a typed list in my purse and a credit card size list in my wallet.

Yes, I am VERY ALLERGIC TO DRUGS. I am allergic to all the antibiotics and opiates. It is very scarey and the docs don't listen and don't care very much. I landed on oxygen after my total knee replacement.

Once you have a bad reaction...it can get worse if you take the same drug again. I have a Medic alert necklace and list of all my meds and all my allergies in my purse.

Medic alert is out of California and you can look them up on the internet.

I'm allergic to Sulfa antibiotics. Thankfully I tolerate most very well. Can't imagine not being able to take antibiotics! I have Lyme disease and Bartonella and have been on several antibiotics at once for 20 months. I've learned with these diseases that there are some really good anti microbial herbs like Banderol, Cumanda, Cat's Claw and others. Wonder if you ladies would tolerate the herbs. Many people have gotten better from Lyme and coinfections with herbs when the antibiotics didn't work. Something to consider.

I'm very allergic to erythromycin antibotics and react within a few minutes to taking it, my reaction is tremors, itching, chest tightness. Make sure all your doctor know you have reactions to these medications and maybe get a medic alert tag.

I am so ticked off after seeing a local tv program about saving the lives of young white heroin addicts.

Where were all the do-gooders when they didn't bother to help me after my total knee replacement? I told them about my problem when I was visiting the PA for my pre-scheduling visit. I talked to the doctor who took care of my being knocked out with a spinal.

Why was my file not red flagged? I landed up on oxygen and it was horrible. Sent to a terrible rehab place.

I have contributed a great deal to this community and all they care about is junkies.
