Suggest getting your Vitamin B12 level tested. If the result is less than 500, you probably should try to take a sublingual Vitamin B12 supplement (methylcobolamin or hydroxycobolamin are the best forms).
Also, the steroids will interfere with the absorption and processing of certain nutrients critical to your health. My DH has been on long-term steroids for severe chronic allergies and we have found the following supplements to be very helpful for cutting down on the severity of the effects on the body:
Fish Oil - for the Omega-3 essential fatty acids (anti-inflammatory; good for the brain, skin, and immune system)
MSM - steroids interfere with sulfur metabolism, thus weakening connective tissue and skin; bonus: MSM may help reduce joint pain
Comprehensive Daily MultiVitamin/Mineral - for general nutritional benefit
Calcium-Magnesium-Zinc-Vit. D - steroids deplete these minerals, and Vitamin D is needed for absorption of the calcium
Probiotics are also beneficial, since steroids tend to promote yeast overgrowth in the gi tract. Some physicians prefer to recommend Kefir or live/fresh (not canned) sauerkraut instead of the probiotic pills.
Steroids also interfere with the sodium-potassium balance in the body, tending to decrease potassium and increase sodium (which can result in swelling of the ankles). Therefore, it is helpful to get additional potassium (best sources are a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables) to help compensate.
I was told by more than one doctor to try to elevate my legs above the level of my heart for 20-30 minutes at least once a day to help with the swelling of the ankles.
For sinus congestion, I have found a mixture of Fenugreek and Thyme very helpful for myself. Often, chronic sinus issues can be due to fungal sinus infections (antibiotics will not fix this). Saline sinus rinses (netti pot, or saline nasal spray) may help remove allergens from the nose, which may reduce any allergy-related congestion.
