I have been asked to start this new post about the mutated gene I carry. During the last couple of years, I have developed a few health issues - arthritic type, high ferritin, insomnia, adrenal fatigue. Always been healthy... through genetic testing I found that I am positive for the MTHRF A1298C mutation. It's inherited. It's also very common. I am, by no means, an expert on this whole new body of study but basically, the MTHFR, CBS and SOUX genes control the methylation of the body's cells. This deals with purging the cells of toxins (this is just the tip of the ice berg for the cellular processes that take place). Heavy metals we pick up in our daily lives (in water, air, fumes, foods), excess iron for menopausal women, sulfites, chemicals and normal enzymes that build up due to other methylation pathways being screwed up... scientists are beginning to think this is why some people can metabolize things and others can't. When I got the results and researched what this particular gene affected, it explained so much to me and also about my 85 year old mother. And I am positive for just one of the MTHFR genes (they come in pairs), if I had two mutated genes, I could be even worse. I have not been tested for the CBS or SOUX gene to see if there are issues there. MTHFR.net is one of the best sites. Dr. Ben Lynch, he has podcasts and videos you can watch, is one of the leading researchers on this subject. Dr. Lunch mentions the SOUX gene and sulfites but his emphasis is on the MTHFR gene.I hope this can shed some light on the health puzzle that can be so confusing at times.
