Hi everyone-  I am a fellow allergy sufferer.  I have had allergies since I was 15 now I am 46.  But in the last year, my symptoms have gotten so bad I can hardly stand it.  I have had all the tests, allergic to 63 out of 66 weed/trees/grasses, dust mites . I also have allergic asthma.  I have tried Zyrtec, Zyrtec D, Singulair, Allegra, Claritin, Benedryl, Advair, all the inhalers, etc.  Am constantly experiencing nasal congestion, itchy mouth/throat/ear canals. sneezing and fatigue.  I think my allergist is at his wits end.  I have been approved for this new

injection Xolair.  Have any of you tried it?  If so, had it helped you?  I don't know if it will help.  I have also tried

accupuncture too.

 

Any help or advice would be so appreciated!!!

Welcome!  My allergist/immunologist recently started me on a medication that is quite old and is actually a tri-cyclic antidepressent, but is now used as an allergy med.  It's supposed to be 1,000 times better than Zyrtec, Benadyrl, etc.  It had helped alot, although I still need to stay away from all of my allergens.  But, before it I couldn't make it through the day without getting sick...now most days I do ok!  The med is called Doxepin if you'd like to ask your doctor about it! 

Good luck, and I may ask my doctor about the Xolair injection...

Your allergy case is definitely passed the norm here...I'm sorry you have had such a rough go of it!

I've personally never tried it, nor anyone in my family, so I do not have any first hand knowledge of this.

I have found a couple of links that describe this injection so yourself or others that are potentially interested in this particular med. can read the info.

Hello PWocean,

 

You really sound like you are very uncomfortable. I have never read any postings on a chat board before. What a great sounding board for info & support.

 

I work for a medical education company and saw your posting while I was doing some research on allergy induced asthma. Your letter was from October, so I wonder if you have tried Xolair yet, did it work for you? Did your doctor suggest it as a last resort? How are you doing now?

 

If anyone else has had any experience with Xolair I would like to hear your experiences, too. It is so helpful to have true info from the patient perspective, not just from the pharm company.

I started on Xolair in late March.  I self inject at home without any problems - no swelling or irritation.  It does take a while to mix and has to be done slowly and very conscientiously, though. 

Unfortunately, it hasn't done a thing for my allergic asthma yet.  My doc says give it six months.  I do feel very achy but had fibromyalgia and arthritis before I started Xolair.  I've heard some people say that theirs improved along with chronic sinusitis (which I also have) but again, no change in me. 

I think that as new types of treatment (non steroidal and non "stimulating" type drugs) come on that there will be more competition and faster acting drugs w/few side effects.  Right now I don't feel that Genentech is all that sympathetic!  I'll know more about my own case in another 2 or 3 month, hopefully!   eyes

I have been on Xolair, I think for about 3 1/2 years now.  I am 56 years old and was diagnosed with asthma about 5 years ago.  It came on with a vengeance.  I have only had one ER visit and no hospital stays.  My allergist has pulled me through many full-blown asthma attacks in her office which most physicians will not do.  This usually requires several injections of epinephrine.  I do take a couple of controller medications along with the Xolair injections.  I still have to take Prednisone from time to time and still get bronchitis.  But, I don't go to the ER and I am not in the hospital like a lot of people with asthma this severe.  So, I would have so say that Xolair helps me.
