All positive Skin prick test, 78 tests.

Hello everyone,

New member here looking for some advice on what these kind of results could mean. My wife's doctor is wanting blood tests but we can go for a couple more weeks because she was on prednisone 2 weeks ago.

She suffers from severe asthma, and has always had problems with allergies. We got a skin prick test done today and they tested 78 different items, and all of them came back with a positive result. This confused us because the doctor started talking about of different things including possibly autoimmune disease, or lupus.

Has anyone had results like this and if so what were some of the things your doctor suggested or what was the outcome for yourself?

50 to 60 percent of positive skin tests are inaccurate. Blood tests are not accurate either.

The best test is keeping a record (food journal) of what you eat and your reactions.

Was your wife taking antihistamines around the time of the test? That would interfere with testing.

Nope, we were very careful about that, no antihistamine for at least a week. We have tracked down the food allergy we thought to corn, but it had escalated recently, about 2 weeks ago from internal, to a rash with hives and things that were safe for her aren't anymore.

We are really worried that she can't seem to eat anything anymore without developing a rash and hives. They did give her an epi pen in case the reaction does continue to get worse, but at this point we don't even know what to avoid anymore.

Wait a second...were these 78 skin prick tests for foods or for pollen/dust allergies?

Foods do indeed have a high rate of false positives, but pollens/dust/etc have lower rates of false positives.

Did they do a control prick with saline to make sure she didn't have a reaction to that? Some people can have a reaction to any scratch on their skin.

Were they given with a plastic prick? You have to wonder if it's something to do with the means if it's every single one. That's frustrating. I am sorry.

Yes, they did 2 control saline, 1 histamine, they only tested a few foods, but yes all trees, grasses, animals, pollens, molds, ect. Had a 3-6 response on either the wheal or the redness. Both contoL salines were negative with no reaction.

OK, that makes sense - well, at least in terms of the testing procedure. Both control saline being normal means the reactions were probably real. Being allergic to every single one, though, wow, that's awful. I was tested like that for 75 or 80 things (few foods, trees, grasses, animals, molds, mites, etc) and was allergic to about 45 if I remember right.

It could be simply lots and lots of allergies, but it could be some more underlying immune abnormalities like you said.

What's the next step?

Waiting for a blood test, we have to wait about 2 weeks because of her last set of steroids that were given when the hives got really bad and covered almost her whole torso. So I just wanted to feel out what some other people's experience was with this situition.

Well I don't know anybody who was allergic to all 78 items, but I can tell you that with me, I did allergy shots for about 6 years. Upon re-test, most of my allergies were gone. But the ones that remained - to dust mites - were my biggest problem, and still are. So although my tests showed big improvements, my symptoms didn't improve much.

Let us know how the blood tests go in a couple of weeks.
