Flu like symptoms, is this an allergy?

Hello,
For about 5 months I have been experiencing weird episodes. Once or twice a month randomly I wake up in the middle if the night with flu like symptoms such as:

-muscle aches in all extremities
-joint pain
-skin gets sensitive to touch (this could be just a result of hypersensitivity due to joint and muscle pain)
-tingling in the chest when inhaling deep
-coughing due to phlegm in the upper respiratory tract
-and headache (sometimes)
-wheezing breath (sometimes)
-NO fever.

This last for about an hour, one or maybe two nights (non consecutive) in a month. In the morning following this, I feel very sore, with dull pain in the finger joints and headache, coughing up sputum. Chest may or may not get tingly when breathing in deep.

Have been tested negative on Lyme, no anaerobic/aerobic bacterial growth, all blood results are nominal. Chest X-ray = nothing. Pulmonary Function Test indicated Mild Hyperinflation, but nothing to worry about according to doc. Healthy overall. I'm physically fit. Male, early 30. Do not smoke.

Does anyone else experience something similar and was properly diagnosed? My family physician does not know.

P.S.
I get mild seasonal allergies around March - May times. This year however I have not stopped coughing in the mornings since march. Family physician seems to think that is due to post-nasal drip. I do have two cats (for almost 9 years) and get itchy if they are too up-close and personal.

I think from your description it could be (I'm guessing) something your eating. I have a lot of food allergies and what I found helpful was a food diary. Its a nuisance and takes some work, but necessary to enable you to pinpoint if in fact you are eating something that doesn't agree with you. Even if you only do this for a month, it will be worth it to know, because you need to rule out food allergies. Keep a careful record, write everything down.

When I started recording everything I stupidly forget to write down olive oil that I was cooking my food in, and after weeks of feeling ill it turned out to be the olive oil (salicylates)

The only other thing I can think of is cleaning substances...they are full of toxic chemicals and if someone is cleaning your house using these that can cause problems.

With anything like this it is going to take some work to figure out what is causing it, but the first step I think is to rule out food problems.

I also have pets, three dogs, and I am fine with them as long as I wash my hands after touching them.

Thank you for your reply and for the suggestion.
I started recording my exact symptoms and what I did a day before leading to the episodes (not a super detailed description) to try and narrow down any external factors that might be involved.
I will start a food journal today. And I will ask my wife if she used any cleaning agents this past Friday when I had another episode.


PS: Just had a conversation with family physician. She does not think what I am describing are allergies or asthmatic symptoms, even though according to her the pulmonary function testing indicated: Mild Hyperinflation. She rather seemed annoyed and unhelpful. I think she marked me as a hypochondriac.. ehh...
