The Seasonal Spring Itching and Rashes

Like Clock-Work, every Spring for the past 4 years now, the intense itching, hives, little red bumps begin. They spread wherever and whenever I scratch them on contact. Big rashes, little rashes, hives, and bumps on my feet upward and all over, wherever I scratch.. Definitely worsens in the night. My doctor gave me the generic of Claritin which is Loratidine. I also have Benadryl here I bought over the counter. I do not like Benadryl as I feel drunk and want to sleep, but it works. Does anyone take Claritin or Zyrtec? Did you have any side-effects? I have not taken the Loratidine yet, as I do not want any side effects to happen. I just read some bad things about it. I also take 10mg Montelukast every night. I am putting salt water and ice packs on my skin out of a bucket for relief.

I stopped my two allergy meds after I was diagnosed with a (benign) nasal tumor, which was removed. I didn't know if my long-standing and worsening symptoms were caused in part or wholly because of the growth. After healing, I added each back. I have no adverse effect from daily citirizine (generic Zyrtec) for occasional sneezing (it's pine pollen season here in NC). I don't need the montelukast (generic Singulair) now, so I haven't tried it again, and I also believe it was doing nothing for me before. I think you just have to experiment with these meds.

For skin symptoms, I would consult an experienced dermatologist. The better ones can take one look and tell you what the specific cause is and what to try.

It can really pay off to get a medical expert's opinion if you haven't. I (and our internist) thought my severe nasal congestion was caused by allergies and/or the meds I have to take. It turned out I had that tumor, which kept growing and eventually closed off all my sinuses on one side. Trip to the ENT specialist, surgery, and problem completely solved!

GleninIndy, I am a long term chronic seasonal allergy person. I am talking 20 years plus & I live in a state that has mild winters so we don't get cold enough to kill out some of the offenders.

I used Claritin when it was by rx only, then switched when it became OTC. My dr suggested switching out Claritin & Zyretec every couple of months to help with tolerance. I have not had any side effects. My 16 year old grandson has been on the OTC stuff too for years, no side effects. I imagine if I got on the internet I would find tons of stuff negative about the meds I take. All warnings are a CYA for the pharmaceutical companies, not to mention the word potential, meaning it may or may not happen. I did switch to Flonase a few years ago, plus I take the generic Singluair. I use a salt water nose spray several times a day.

Benadryl makes a non-drowsy formula now. I couldn't handle the drowsiness & only took it at bedtime when I did use it. If you find it helps with the itching take it at bedtime only. There are various OTC creams for itching.

Our pollen is very bad every year, everything is covered in yellow pollen right now. I shower at night & wash my hair to keep the pollen off. I also change my pillowcase several times a week, anything that may help.
