Hi everyone,

Thanks to the ones that answered my question about how to post or receive answers.

I had an acute asthma attack in sept and still am bothered with lots of phlegm. This will be the third time they have put me on predisone. I dont like to take too much of that because of side effects and also extra weight gain.

Wonder if anyone has any suggestions as how to eleminate the phelgm or what else can be done. I have taken the musinex also for 30 days and it still have not cleared out all of the phlegm. Of course my doctor said I would have it untill the bronchial tubes are cleared and not swollen. Still having some shortness of breath some of the time. Any advice or help is appreciated. Hope to hear from some of you that maybe having some of the same problems. Thanks. Bjd

Good afternoon Everyone!

 BJD, I had that problem recently when I contracted a sinus infection. I was antibotic for 8 weeks and prednisone for 2 weeks. I had acute asthma attacks also. I would cough alot and I would cough out as much of the mucous as I possible could. Try not to swallow the mucous ( sorry so gross) the more of it that you can spit out the better. I tried a cough syrup. That helped to make the mucous thinner, and easier to cough up and out. A nebulizer is also a good idea. Medication is turned into a fine mist. Advair Diskus is the best controller asthma medication I think. It is for me anyhow. Could also try turning on your shower real HOT. Let the bathroom steam up with the door closed. Then, sit in the bathroom and breathe in the air. That will loosen up the mucous. Those are some suggestions that I know. Hope, that helps some. Good Luck. Best Wishes to you. :-)

Hi Everyone,

Thanks to all of you that posted help about the neverending phlegm. I am hoping that soon this will get some better. You would certainly think in this day of modern medicine that someone could give all of us some quick relief from this problem I continue to drink lots of water, and have avoided the dairy products that someone suggestion and I am hoping that it will begin to get better soon. It is better from about a month ago but has had this since Sept 2 when I was in the energency room with an acute asthma attack. I keep going back but my doctor keeps giving me the same thing. I take Nasonex for breathing easier, Xonopex in the nublizer machine twice a day, also take predisone, thake protonic for acid reflux and Azmcort inhaler twice a day also. Albuterol for quick recovery. You would certianly think with all of this that things would be better. would love to hear back from anyone that still has most of these same problems. I could not take the Advair so they put me on the Azmacort in place of that. How do you try to keep the house dust free, seems that is one of my problemss because I have lots of allergies also. Seeing a Doctor on the 14 of Dec. for that and maybe that will help also. Wonder if any of you have trouble with Dust mites, so many have told me I need to incase my pillow and also my mattress with the dustmite cover, wonder if any of you have had to do that. Appreciate any of your advise that you have to offer, Thanks again B J D

My son is highly allergic to dust mites and we have his pillow encased as well as his mattress but another suggestion by his pediatrician was to put cheese clothe over the vents in your home as well as get a hypoallergic filter for the furnace. The cheese clothe works great just be sure to change it twice a month. Also, if you have carpet either remove it or get a vacuum that has a hypo filter attached. Keep your home well hydrated either by having a humidifier on your furnace or placing water bowls by the vents. This will also keep dust down to a minimum and also by not allowing it float freely about the home.

BJD, Hi, are you doing any better? I had the same situation last month. I took predisone and that took alot of it away. But, it still took about 3 weeks after the predisone was finished before it really started to get better for me. It is frustrating that is for sure. For dust mite problems. I have my mattress and pillow case encase in an allergy encasing keeps the dust mites out. When dusting have a cloth that is damp not too terrible wet. Go over places where there is dust. The damp cloth will soak up the dust. If you just sweep those duster things over things then the dust moves around in the air all over the entire place. Just makes things worse. Wash bedding in hot water 1 time a week. Blankets hot water once a month. No carpet if you can. Those are some suggestions that I know of. Brandi.
