Things that pollute the air at home, work, or outdoors may bother your lungs if you have asthma. These things are hard to avoid. They include smoke, perfume, sprays, & car exhaust. These tips may help you stay away from them.
Smoke: Don't smoke. Don't let people smoke in your home or car. Sit in the nonsmoking section when eating out. If you can find a restaurant (most are going to nonsmoking), patronize them since you will still receive a moderate degree of smoke even if you sit in the nonsmoking section (smoke is picked up through vents & distributed throughout the building). Ask for nonsmoking rooms in hotels & rental cars. You can purchase vent HEPA filters when traveling & staying in hotels/motels. Avoid fireplaces, scented candles, wood stoves. If you can't, sit away from them. Make sure the smoke is directed outside. Avoid food cooked over wood or charcoal.
Smog: Read/listen to local air quality reports. Stay indoors during poor air quality control. Use air conditioning instead of opening windows during poor air quality days.
Other Irritants: Wear a mask when doing tasks that dirty the air (dusting, sweeping, gardening, working in the yard). If you must use sprays, use those that come in pump bottles instead of aerosol cans. Use them in well-ventilated areas. Pour liquid clearners instead of spraying them.
Strong Odors: Use sent-free products whenever you can. For cleaning mix water w/white vinegar or baking sode instead of using bleach or ammonia. Store clothes in boxes w/lids instead of using mothballs or cedar chips. Use exhaust fans while cooking to reduce odors.
