I've had chronic hives for about 15 years. The flare ups are rare (there was about an 8 year time in the middle where I never had any). They have become more frequent in the past five years. They lasted for a little over a year the first time, and all the times after have been mush shorter. The longest lasting the most recent time, about 4 months so far.
when I first got them when I was about 10 I had many blood tests done and went to the doctor many times to try find the cure. They never came up with anything. They were never able to test me for food allergies due to the fact that I had to be off my medications (Zyrtec) and clear of hives for 3 days. That wasn't possible for me.
I normally have hives everyday, even with taking a Zyrtec every 24 hours. Each hive stays for about 20 hours so by the time the first batch clears up, I have new ones coming. Basically, I always have them even with taking my medication.
I decided to do some research and see if I could find any answers. These forums really helped me in deciding what to do to help my hives so I figured I should post what I found out.
I started with thinking I needed to go on the candida diet. That seemed to help, but I think it had more to do with I was only eating vegetables and not a yeast overgrowth. With that, I read about leaky gut syndrome and decided to start treating myself for that. I would take 3 pills of grapeseed extract everyday along with a powerful probiotic. At this point, my diet had expanded to include some rice and fruit as well. I saw results within about 5 days. My hives were much better (still had to take a zyrtec about every other day). After I noticed the improvement, I decided to start adding food to my diet everyother day to see if I could find any food triggers. I noticed that almost every food I added would cause a reaction which made me believe that leaky gut was my problem. I began taking a digestive enzyme everyday as well.
I've been doing this for about 1 1/2 months now, gradually adding food. I've eliminated all gluten, dairy and processed food from my diet and cut WAY back on sugar and caffeine. I now only take a zyrtec about every 72 hours and most of the time I have to take one it has to do with I added a new food to my diet that I have an intolerance to. So far I've noticed I get a reaction from: Tomato, black pepper, wheat, avocado and possibly grapes (so far). I'm beginning to think that I have a latex allergy as tomato, wheat, grapes and acovado are all linked to that and I know that my sister has a latex allergy as well.
With eliminating these foods, my reactions are now less freqeunt and I'm able to control my hives. If I notice some appearing, I take a Zyrtec and they go away within a few hours and it also prevents any more from coming. Zyrtecs have never worked for me in this way.
I believe just eliminating the processed foods, sugar, and wheat from my diet has been a huge help. I'm just glad to see that even I can't get rid of them all, at least I can manage them to a certain degree just by changing my diet. As I continue to add foods, hopefully they stay this manageable!
