Need help for hubby...what are best OTC allergy meds?

Hey all! My hubby is having a time w/ seasonal allergies. It is super dry here in the South (literally not a drop of rain in months!). He is really suffering....and extremely stubborn about going to the doctor. Any good OTC meds? I think it is a combo of sinuses and allergies. I'm hoping if I buy something he will take it! Thanks!!

I also live in the South and I hear you.  I have year round allergies and asthma, so I only take prescription medications and don't know anything about the OTC's.  I would suggest asking at your pharmacy unless someone else comes along with a suggestion.  He has to be miserable if he isn't taking anything.

Hi there Tab! :) First I have to ask.....do you have a humidifier in your house? If not, then be sure to have one for your bedroom at least. We spend so much time in our bedrooms sleeping that having a humidifier in the room at night should make him more comfortable. Second, I know how stubborn men can be! - so he can try Tylonel Sinus medications, Sudafed, Clariten (not Clariten D - this could dry him out more). Also what might help is Saline Nasal Spray - this can help loosen his sinuses a bit. You don't suppose he is getting what you and your son are passing around do you? Does he feel snotty in his throat/nose, does he have an itchy throat and eyes? What are his symptoms?

I think he has what the little one gave me but he keeps saying it is allergies. He is blowing his nose constantly and says his throat feels icky. How's that for a good description...ha ha! I got him some sinus stuff last night and I think it helped a bit. It was CVS brand for the tylenol stuff. I'll break out the humidifer tonight...surely he won't mind my son's froggy humidifer?! I guess i am on the right track. Thanks!

I can sympathize with your husband. However I have gone to the doctor three times since nothing seems to help me. I live in Atlanta and we have been bone dry for months. I have had intermittent sinus headaches for about a month now..ears bother me at time as well. I am not blowing my nose much but I do have occassional drip in my throat.

Doctor said I have allergic sinusitis and let me tell you I am over it. Ear was bothering me badly today until I took some excedrin.

I am now on a decongestant and Nasonex..not sure Nasonnex helping..

Anyone out there have any words of wisdom or encouragement?

I live in West Texas. It's dry and full of allergens. One thing I've found that helps is Ocean Mist. (OTC, Wal-Mart) You can use it anytime. It flushes out allergens.

claritin, sudafed, and benedryl are all very good. benedry will make him sleepy so I only recomend that for when he's ready to go to bed. I take all three and I do very well with them.

18. No lengthy signatures. Limit signatures to 10 lines or less.  Moderators will edit and/or remove signatures that are too long.
