Hello all,

I haven't posted here for a while because my anxiety has been mostly under control. Unfortunately, a few weeks ago my anxiety attacks and health anxiety returned with a vengence! I've had bad insomnia and have been worrying about everything (I think all of this was triggered by starting a new job with alot more responsibilities than I've ever had, and by a mild ulcerative colitis flare up).

Anyway, I finally bit the bullet and went on a low dose of Wellbutrin, 75mg. My doc wanted to start me out slow, since I tend to be SUPER medication sensitive and had a bad experience when I tried Celexa a few months ago.

Here's my question: it's been 4 days since I started the Wellbutrin and I swear I'm already feeling way better! The only side effects I've noticed are a slight dry mouth and a lack of appetite. Is it possible to be feeling this much better after only 4 days, and on such a low dose? Or, could it be something else that's causing the changes (i.e. placebo affect, etc.).

Does anyone have experience with Wellbutrin, and if so, how long did it take for it to kick in?

Hi Laura, I am glad that you are back with us, but wish it was under better circumstances.  Unfortunately, as you know A/P can rear it's ugly head at any time.  The only experience I have with Wellbutrin is not a good one, after just 3 days I had to take myself off it as it gave me major tremors over my entire body. Maybe what you are experiencing is a combination of the med starting to work as well as you knowing that you are on a medication that could possibly help you with the A/P.  Maybe just knowing you are on it is helping you to calm down.  That's just my two cents worth and I'm sure others will chime in with their thoughts and experiences.  Good luck to you and keep posting to let us know how you are doing. I have had meds begin working in four days.  I think we're told 4-6 weeks as a worst case scenario and so we won't expect too much too soon.  I am glad you have noticed a difference.  I took Wellbutrin for years with good results.  Not on it now though.

With most SSRIs , SNRIs, MAOIs, and tricyclics the imporvemnet is slow and should. A fast response can actually be sign for the worst of things. Wellbutrin chemically different frm all other classes of Antidepressants, so it does works differentsly too. It is not the strongest of meds, but it is a add-on to other medsbecause of its actions not duplicating thing. For agitation Wellbutrin w/Buspar is the treatment of choice for agitation and anxiety. So back to your question, you should start getting better within 3-5 days of starting the medication unless the dose is too low. I felt better on the 2 day at 450 of wellbutrin when add to my other drugs.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I'm very hopeful that this will get things under control. Quiet pain, I was confused by something you said, "a fast response can actually be a sign for the worst of things." Does this mean that a quick response to meds can mean I should expect bad side effects later? I'm confused.

No anxiety attacks yet today at all! Whoopie!
