Would Like to Ask a Favor

My dad had a heart attack late last week and underwent a quadruple bypass surgery shortly thereafter. Even though my father and I haven't had the most ideal relationship over the years, I find myself working in the family business these days. So not only am I worried about him as a person, I'm also worried about how he's going to make a living, how my step mom will get by, and of course about myself. We'd obviously all lose our health insurance, people would be laid off, and it's a bad economy to look for another gig.

I'm not a holy roller or anything like that, but do believe in God. Even though I don't post much here anymore I thought I would come and ask if some of you who also believe could perhaps say a prayer for my dad. Even in the best case, he's has a long and hard recovery ahead of him.


If you want more details I have written about it in my blog, which is in my signature. I'll check in, hopefully, but if I should disappear it's likely because I'm either trying to keep the business afloat or have left town to be with him.

I am so very sorry about you Father.  Most patients do well after this surgery so you have my prayers and support for both you and your family. I wll ask others I know to add your family to their prayer list.

I thank you all very much. He is still in the ICU, but everything appears to be okay as far as I can tell. I'll feel better when he's in a regular room and I can talk to him.

That's great news that he is ouit of surgery and going well. I'll still keep those prayers up until he is out of ICU. Take some deep breaths now okay?

I am sure he will go to a regular room soon.  I am so happy to hear he is out of surgery and so far all is well.

Thanks again, everyone.

He finally got out of ICU late night before last. I got to talk to him yesterday morning. He's still pretty goofy. I don't know whether it's the pain meds or the surgery or a combination of a lot of things, but his voice sounded good. His doctors said he might go home today but I kind of doubt that. Doc says as soon as he has a bowel movement and can walk fifty feet he's gone. But he's a big guy who's been laid up for over a week and had open chest surgery so I don't know if the walking thing will happen today. But he is able to eat and drink now without getting sick. The nurses were telling my step mother that sometimes the stomach is "the last organ to wake up" after a surgery and I'd never heard that before, but I guess they know what they've seen just about everything.

We've been assured that this is normal, but the man has been saying some of the funniest things. Yesterday he implied that I was married to one of our employees and he hoped "we could all get together soon". Weird, haha. Before he was out of ICU, he told my step mom that he didn't know why they haven't given him a regular room because people around there were "dying left and right".

In any event I'm going to go down there tonight and see him.

So glad to hear the good news.  Sometimes patients get ICU psychosis when they are in a unit where you can't always tell when it is night or day but it clears once they get into a regular room and life returns to normal.

Could be his pain med too. idea

I will keep praying for all of you.

Thanks. I know if I were him I probably would have ripped all the tubes out and made a jail break by now. A very slow, painful one, haha. I've never in my life seen a person with more tubes, electrodes, and what-have-you stuck to them. It has to be maddening.

But, yeah, early on he wasn't making any sense whatsoever according to my step mom. That was starting to get better even before they moved him. Apparently it's an actual side effect of the surgery itself...I've read several places where it may take several months or maybe a full year before he gets all his wits back. Luckily he's such a smart guy that even if he's a half-wit he's doing better than most, haha. So there's that, what you call psychosis and what they call "ICU syndrome", and the meds that could be affecting him.

I'm a lot less worried. I know he'll have a hard time with the recovery and lifestyle changes, but it's one day at a time right now.

And business is actually up this week, so who knows about that. It could force us to think out of the box a little bit and come out stronger on the flipside. You never know.
