I started having panic/ axienty attacks about a 9 months ago .. being i have no insurance i am just now seeing someone about .. The doctor put me on 2 meds that were cheap for me to afford so i wanted to know if they are any good ..

 1. Hydroxyz Pam 50 mg 

 2.Amitriptylin 100mg

 would love anyone input on this meds

The two that I know of are Alprazolam (aka Xanax) which seems to help me.
I also heard of people taking ST John's Wort which can be purchased off the shelf at most stores. It is claime dto be a mood stabilizer and treats anxiety. Pretty interesting, I read it was used a lot during Vietnam and Korean wars for veterans in combat to treat anxiety.

Hi Jenny

Welcome to the forum. I took Amitriptylin which is one of the older types of antidepressants and did not have much luck with it but every one is different and what works for one does not work for an other, It usually takes about four weeks before you see an improvement so stick with it and I hope it works for you. Have you considered therapy? I have done therapy and found it really helped me something you could consider, I hope things get better for you and keep posting to let us now how you are getting on.

 Hydroxyz Pam

Is an anti histamine which can be used to treat anxiety, in trials it has been shown to be as effective as benaodiazepam with much fewer side effects and hydrox is non-addictive. Hydroxy has interactions with alcohol so you shouldn't drink while taking it (like all anxiety meds). There are questions over hydroxy saftey in pregnancy. Hydroxyzine is usually taken to counter the physical side of anxiety dis-orders.

Im not doctor thats just from wikipedia, active component of Hydroxy Pam is Hydroxyzine, if you wish to read up on it.

St. Johns Wort is a serotonin reuptake inhibitor (amongst other things) taking it is it like taking an extra SSRI and will increase effectiveness of your meds and with that the side effects. Basically dont take ST JOHN's WORT WITHOUT SEEKING MEDICAL ADVICE.

I know St.John's is seen as a natural remedy at that make it appealing to people but it really is potent stuff and carries the same risk as any medical anti-anxiety drug. Bit like taking citaelopram when your already taking xanax.

Amitriptylin

It is a non-selective reuptake inhibitor (Tri Cylic Antidepressant (TCA)) and will effect the levels of Serotonin, Nor-adrenaline and Histamine in your brain. As a non-selective inhibitor it has more side effects than SSRIs. Apparently its one of the best drugs for helping insomnia.

Again not a doctor etc... and have never tried a TCA. Jus from research on internet.

Hydroxyz Pam is Vistaril and is used for anxiety.

Amitriptyline (trade name Elavil) is a tricyclic antidepressant and is a good drug for many people.

If you were looking for meds that are inexpensive, these two would fall into that category and also have been useful for many.  If your physician Rx these meds, I would certainly give them a try.
