Has any one had to quit a job becuase of an anxiey or Panic disorder?

Just wanted to know if anyone has quit a job becuause of the panic of thinking of going to work. I have had 6 jobs in the last 4 years. I get to a point to where if I think about work I get paniced. I know nothing bad is going to happen to me but I feel like I can not face my co-workers after about a year or so. I need a job and the one I am at now has lasted the longest so far but I feel like I just can not go back there. Even driving by sends me into a panic and a feeling of over welming anxiety. Please help if anyone has any info that my help me out. Thank You,

I almost quit the job that I have now and it's an excellent job. I just started in March. Just the thought at night knowing I have to wake up and go to work makes me sick! But I did find that getting a mp3 player and listening to it while I work, done wonders for me. I don't know if your job permits that or not. But I just try to find something to take my mind or occupy myself with to get me through the day. Hope all goes well for you.

I quit 3 jobs in 12 years because of my anxiety. I currently am unable to work. It has been about 3 years now since I last worked. I don't drive except for the area around me which is about a mile. As the fire department is within that range.

I let my anxiety win. After fighting it for over 20 years I gave up. And of course now regret letting it win. But am working on getting back to normal. I have started a business out of my home. Which has helped. But manly in just restocking my supplies. But it keeps me busy. I will be doing craft shows and such next year and need to be able to travel and drive for the events. So its time to fix it now.

Last week I was having panic attacks after my bo scolded me for some mistakes I did. It left me paralyzed. In any case what I am doing now is just temporary, until October and have to find another one..... which creates more anxiety. Anyway, when I went back to work on Monday, he seemed different, and he was sayong that he was feeling stressed.

Today, I am sick with Larygitis, and my Dr. has told me not to take any cough syrup as such. But to just let it take it norm. I stayed from work, and the boss called, wanting to know where some work I did was.

Well that's h0w my life is....

Anxiety has caused me to lose my job too. I was working a full time job as a manager and they expected a lot of me. The store owner thought it was something that I could just turn off. I had to quit and was so upset. I haven't worked since, this was the summer of 2005.

I just put in my two weeks 2 days ago. All I do is cry, I can't function. The pain is unbearable and I just can't hold back the tears. I'm constantly afraid of dieing.

I know how you feel. Even though I do not usualy give a 2 week notice I just quit. I quit because then I do not have to see the look on anyones face when I tell them that I am done. I actualy have no referances because of this and this could possibly keep me from getting another job. I sure hope that you feel better and not let this get you down. You are going about quiting in the right way and when you do feel better and can get another job you will have a reference. I do hope that this can give you a little comfort. Pleas keep me posted.

Hi everyone,
I've taken sick leave for the past 5 weeks since my anxiety 'hit', and now I'm leave without pay until July. This has happened to me before and I'm lucky my work approves my extended leave. My boss has also said there's an option i can take leave without pay for the rest of the year. Anyway what I'm saying is that when I get anxious and then depression tags along, there's no way i can work at all. The thought of it is paralysing for now. I'm just waiting for the meds to kick in and hopefully that and counselling will help me get better and work out what to do. I've always worked so if I quit this job I'd be looking for something different and I have no idea what else to do. Good luck everyone

I took early retirement 2nd degree to Anxiety and Depression.  I had 26 years in when I resigned.

I must be the different one in the bunch. Because I prefer to go to work because it takes my mind off my troubles and I seem to worry/fret about things less. Its like work keeps my mind occupied. I also have Crohns Disease and working seems to help keep my mind off my health too. Wierd, huh???

I don't know about weird but you are definetly lucky. I am trying to find a legitimate work at home job/ business and I am getting discouraged. I miss having a job.

My work causes major anxiety, I too dread coming to work. My anxiety begins on Sunday morning and comes on full speed on Monday morning. I have a year and a half before I am eligible to retire.

I had my first full blown attack in the office, in the city, and was taken to the ER. I was hospitalized after that and have never been able to work full-time in the office again. I think it depends on the type of job you have, some have very demanding jobs, in stressful working environments.

I was talking to my t about quitting my job today...which I can't. I started having panic attacks/anxiety when I was 19 (I'm 38) and it goes away, comes back (meds varied throughout the years)....my big thing is/was highway driving, and I have a 40 mile commute. Thank god for a GPS because I've had to drive back roads or have my husband drive me. But now the panic has turned into ALL driving, and not just driving but being awake and it's horrible, I feel like I'm losing it and I'm just so glad I have two vacation days this week....my pdoc told me to try Pristiq (I'm only taking Xanax but I think I now have a tolerance as it barely works). I can't function anymore. And I've already been written up for being late or calling in sick and how do you tell your new boss (she just started 3 months ago) hey, I have panic/anxiety?

Hi everyone,
Well i work in IT firm and thought of completing projects on given time frame make me sick.To the extend that i cannot concentrated and end up not meeting proposed time line.This causes me embarrassment and shatters my confidence along with dropping my reputation.Eventually, i get either replaced or removed to other low profile projects and my chances of promotion evaporates.

So good to see that so many of us are in the same boat. I also have struggled with anxiety/panic for many years and finally last year, succumbed after 4 years in a high-stress position. I felt *so* guilty about not being able to handle what everyone around me seemed to be able to deal with. I'm lucky that the company provides both short and long term disability which I'm now on. But again--I've been feeling guilty about using it, like somehow my anxiety wasn't a "real" illness. I'm finally starting to see new options for finding work that will be nurturing, not damaging. A friend just told me about this site tonight. This is the first time I've visited and I'm already very glad I did.

I'm like this quite often too.I have Ulcerative Colitis and most days being at work takes my mind off everything once I get stuck in to what I'm doing.

I lost my job - a very good one too - kept trying to go in and couldnt stay. "it" was just starting and I didnt know what "it" was -Had I been on the right medication, Had I actually been receptive to taking medicine> I might have been able to stay. maybe. In retrospect I think I was going thru peri-menopause . Hormones didnt work for me, some people do wonders on them. I did qualify for social security disability but it is not near what I was making before. So I am in a home I can afford <but not the one I want> and I have to keep within a budget to keep afloat. I am doing better have learned alot thru books -like how to drive again, music blasting singing along for distraction- it works if you see me I am just having an episode and will soon be over it. Driving I had an hour and one half ride to my job in L.A. traffic and of course back again, is it any wonder? What I have learned from all of this - is it can happen to anyone - you can stay and mourn over it, and I did. Then that got old and like alot of you I like people I like being out and about . so I had to relearn the skills and keep trying because I was darned if I was going to let "it" dictate to me. I had to even try to get the courage to step onto my front porch, getting the mail was like going to mars. So you keep trying and you pass milestones and you just get better. It has been a long journey.

Hi

I have not quit a job due to anxiety but my current employer tried to sack me saying I was unfit to work due to my issues with anxiety and depression which I managed to fight and win with help from the union. I am now looking for a new job as the relationship between me and the managers at work is now strained and i don't trust them any more, my problem now is i am suffering lots of anxiety re finding a new job and the thought of going for an interview is feeling me with fear as i know that i am not good at interviews due to my anxiety.

I quit my weekend job and my university degree when i first got diagnosed. I generally find now work is a good thing, i mean i hate my job like most people but its good to have something to wake up for every morning and i like talkingto every1 here. Having said that i do find work makes my anxiety worse at times, but overall i would say work is the thing keeping me sane right now ;p

I have quit several jobs over the last few years due to anxiety which caused the fibro to flare horribly. Since we moved to this area, I have not been able to find a good job fit. At 55, I am more sensitive to everything, such as noise, music, my general surroundings. I cannot make peace with a job that I am uncomfortable in or working full time. I did when I was younger, but no more. So we are cutting back, budgeting more and being very careful. I am looking for a part time job and praying there is something out there for me. I do best when I am working PT - it keeps my mind occupied, makes me feel useful and still gives me time and energy to take care of my home. There is a certain amount of anxiety at not being employed, too, but it is not as bad as what I experienced at these jobs.

I quit lifeguarding when I was diagnosed because I had trouble with medications. But now I work in a cubical... what the hell? lol.

Hi,

I feel for you. I just quit my job 2 weeks ago and it was a high profile software company in San Francisco. On paper it was a very appealing job. Downtown San Francisco, profitable company, brand new building. Unfortunately, I developed panic attacks after the 2nd week. At that point, I wasn't about to quit and my friends convinced me to stay a little longer.

I asked myself "What are these panic attacks trying to teach me?"

After 2 months, I was enrolled in training and in the training class I befriended the teacher and told her about the difficulty I was having. She suggested that I try to study for my certification in the tool she was teaching. She said there are plenty of jobs for people who are certified. I felt comfortable with that advice and think the answer had come to me via this teacher.

So, the short story is that I resigned because I couldn't work somewhere that made me feel like someone kicked me in the stomach. My last week is next week and I feel so good about my decision. I got my old self back and realize that a better fitting job will come along and I'll be working again very soon.

Sorry to hear your current job has not worked out but it sounds like you have made the right decision for you and have remained positive about finding new work and I hope you are successful in what ever you decide to do.

I will lock this post down as it is an old post and a lot of the people who responded to this post are no longer on the forum and we are short of space but please feel free to start up your own thread that way you will get more responses to your post.
