I wasn't taking very much Xanax. The doc seemed to think since I wasn't taking that much I could do it cold turkey. I always took the dose that was prescribed. I never took more than I needed. I raced from hospital to hospital to try and find someone to help me as the withdrawal symptoms were awful. Finally, an emergency room nurse put me in the psych ward. I was put back on the Xanax and then weaned off of it.

I am almost 5'7". I got down to less than 90 pounds. People in the psych ward thought I was there for anorexia. I wasn't. I didn't feel like eating, I had diarrhea, shakiness, suicidal thoughts. I was raped at 16 and my father tried molesting me a few times while I was growing up. But I can definitely say nothing was as bad as those 2 weeks in the psych ward and my fear of going home.

(((((((((hugs))))))))))) Thank you so much for sharing your personal story with us.  That was brave of you and your support and kindness here in the forum is always appreciated. 

I did the slow wean off of Ativan but substituted Valium for Ativan.  I was on Ativan 4mg = Valium 40 mg.  The Valium is longer acting and can be broken down into smaller doses.  It took me 9 months but I did not go into withdrawal.  I had been taking a benzo for over 20 years. 

I still use Valium 2 mg-4 mg per day for increased anxiety on an as necessary bases. I have been off AD now for over 3 months.

Anyone looking for info on benzos may want to check this site if you are wanting to wean off a benzo. This is the schedule I used under the supervision of my Psychiatrist.

I was on 2 mg of Xanax XR and 25 mg of Paxil CR a day. I was feeling great and my doctor and I decided to start to slowly take me off.. So I went down to 1 mg of Xanax XR and 12.5 mg of Paxil CR a day. was doing AWESOME. Then found out I needed a tonsilectimy. Went for it, waited at the hospital for 5 hours... Then got so terrified, told my doctor I couldn't go through with it. No my anxiety is back... I am fearful I am going to have to go back to my original amounts if I can't get this under control on my own!
