Can't handle anxiety anymore!

Isn't the medication suppose to make you feel better? it's been three days and I don't know if my meds are not working or is it because I need to be patient! I am taking effexor xr an although I have all of the side effects and real out of the world, I notice my anxiety increases more! I am about to call my doctor I feel so desperate today is my first day back to work and tomorrow I have two exams at school I want to be able to do all my things right..but feeling like this it is hard?

I don't have any answers, but want you to know that someone's out here listening! For what it's worth, here's a couple of experiences I have had:

1) I was on Paxil for years, and I think it took about 10 days to make me feel noticeably different. Other meds - like benzos - work a lot faster.

2) A friend of mine tried taking effexor (for depression, I think) and did not like it at all, so I've heard of at least one other person who had a very hard time with it.

Definitely call your doctor if you think the side effects are going badly for you - I hope you get some relief *very* soon.

I can relate~ I am on Prestiq which is a "cousin" drug of Effexor. I did experience an increase of anxiety at first but after 3 weeks I did notice less symptoms. Could be that I didn't put myself in anxiety inducing situations too. However, I still get unexpected anxiety but not to the panic stage~ Hope you feel better.

Sometimes it takes a few days for a new medication to start working. When you take a new medicine, your body is naturally going to fight it off, let it get used to the drug and then see how it works for you! Call your doctor if you dont feel an improvement after 10 days

I'm not an expert on Effexor, but most of these medicines do take time to kick in. As Kitt explained it can take 8 weeks or so (at a therapeutic level and whenever you increase your dosage - not just starting from day one) in order to feel the full benefit.

Ironically enough, some medications that are prescribed to help people deal with anxiety actually have a side effect of increased anxiety early on. It may take a few weeks, but the side effects should lighten up and/or disappear as the beneficial aspect of the medicine starts to build up. So be patient, but take note of what you're experiencing. If it becomes too much you can always talk to your doctor about trying a different drug. We all respond differently and so there's usually a period of determining what's best for YOU, which isn't always a fun road to go down.

I read your post on my other topic stkitt, thank you for your support whenever I feel desperate and anxious I just start writing and reading in this forum and it really helps me feel better.  you're right stkitt I should give it time to work..
