Hi Charlipop and welcome. I am sorry that you have bean dealing with these heath and anxiety issues for so long:( I do have a couple of questions, and then I'll try to answer some of yours.
Is your current GP the same one that treated you during your meningitis? If not, is he aware of that previous diagnosis? I only bring this up because your current dr. should be aware of all past medical issues, to know how to best treat you now.
Also, do you still live with your parents, and what is their part in this? How do they feel about your anxiety diagnoses? Have they helped to push for more tests such as the CT, or do they seem to agree with how your dr. is proceeding.
The thing is, yes your symptoms could be attributed to anxiety...dizziness, vision problems, fatigue, headaches, ect...are all possible stress-related effects, but it could be attributed to a health problem as well.
If your dr. has thoroughy checked you out, knowing your history...and if your parents/close loved ones agree that you are prone to anxiety, then I think your best course of action would be to start treating your anxiety and see if that helps.
Therapy, specifically CBT is highly effective in treating anxiety and panic. It will help you to examine and stop the negative/fearful thoughts that cause the worry and symptoms.
It is not uncommon for anxiety to start after a serious or chronic illness. (such as your meningitis-I'm sure that was frightening!) I have seen and heard this happen many times , so understand that you are not alone in this. The good news is that there is help. Ask for a referral to a therapist, from your GP and get started as soon as possible.
Keep posting here with us as well. We understand, and are here to help. Best of luck to you in your journey to healing!

Hi Charlipop and welcome to healing well!,
The dizziness, flashing lights, head pressure and tight neck can all be symptoms of a migraine. You may want to be more insistent with your GP about getting tests done to see why you are getting such debilitating migraines. Otherwise, I would suggest getting a second or third opinion. While anxiety is uncomfortable and can lead to migraines, you can usually find relief from things like fast-acting ibuprofen or Tylenol.
I understand wanting to lead a normal teenage life. I missed out when I had my first panic attack at 15 which drastically changed the course of my life. I do suffer from bad headaches and migraines, but no to the extent that you describe.
If your affliction is caused by anxiety, rest assured you are not alone and that you have found a wonderful site to help support you through your struggles and subsequent healing.
People do tend to develop panic disorders in late adolescents and early twenties.
A possible reason you may feel dizzy when having a panic attack or are under stress is due to tension affecting the semicircular canal system in your inner ear, which regulates balance. If the sensation lasts for more than a few seconds, I encourage you to consult a doctor or more specifically an otolaryngologist to rule out anything that may be affecting your inner-ear.
I'm not sure what you mean by tablets. The medicine or supplements you take depend very much on the affliction you actually have. If it is migraines, speak with your doctor or pharmacist for advice. The same goes for anxiety if you wish to go the pharmaceutical route. Otherwise, there are many supplements that have been found to be helpful for anxiety (just mind any contraindications) such as: vitamin B complex, vitamin C and calcium-magnesium.
Of course, there are also many therapies and relaxation techniques that are helpful in overcoming anxiety and controlling stress levels.
Please know that with a little work, you can go back to living a normal teenage life and that you have found a support system here at HW that is more than ready to encourage and support you. But first, I would insist on eliminating any other causes for your migraines. Although starting to reduce any stress levels you have can only help.
Best of Luck,
DarkWolf

Hey Guys thanks so much for your messages :) It come to mind that im not alone in what i have :( The doctor isnt the same one that treated me for meningiters although they do know my medical histortory Just about! It seems like i dont get anywhere when i go i have just been reffered to see a neurologist which has put my mind at ease a little bit as i am going to an ecpert about the dizziness and flashing lights. I have taken lots of different tablets such as antenol, propanalol, which are both betta blockers and i take parocetemol, ibroufen and just pain killers to take some of the headaches away ect. I have recently been perscribed amitriptaline so i should be starting with them soon they are an antil depressant but im worried about starting to take them aswell :/
Its onli recently i have started getting panick attacks and I think i worry about my head too much and it send me panicky... its such a horrible feeeling or hot and cold sweats, i tremble, heart races, start crying, breathing is deeper and i start to panick loads its awful. I am meant to be starting college in septmeber but i am always soo tired and feeeling dizzzy and wonder how an earth i can go college when im like this?? Just want it to go away!! How long does panick attacks and aniety last for any ideas ??

Hi again CP. I hope that you are feeling well today:) To answer your questions regarding panic and anxiety...panic attacks are typically said to peak in about 10 min times, then they start to taper off. Well, I did not find that to be true in my case. As with anything there are variants, and for me, they could be much longer (lasting hours and cycling endlessly it seemed) or one could start, then suddenly stop, withing a minute or two...so everyone, and every attack, is different.
The harder question to answer is how long does anxiety last? I have to honestly tell you that it is usually a chronic condition. Once it starts, it is usually something that you will have to deal with as an ongoing issue. For example, I sought treatment and no longer have panic attacks, but I still have to be careful to manage my stress levels so that I don't get overwhelmed and let anxiety get a foothold.
I encourage you to get the help that you need, and get going with the things that you want and need to do:) You absolutely can attend college, and will do really well, I'm sure! There are people who battle anxiety in all walks of life from students to professionals...it is not something that has to hold you back...just something that needs to be managed;)
Be well and keep posting!

I am really sorry that you had another attack
I am not familiar with that medication...maybe someone else can advise you regarding that...but I do still recommend and endorse some form of therapy for long-term treatment of anxiety and panic! Try to look into it if you can.
Take care,

Hi charlotte !
a close friend of mine got meningitis a few years ago and almost died. she has had to take klonopin since because it was such a scary experience, it made her anxious.
trust your instincts always and insist on testing to rule out serious problems if you feel that would make you more comfortable. if your doctor won't work with you, there are millions more. always remember that. i'm glad you got a test though finally. i got migraines when i was 19 and developed panic attacks at the same time. my parents were going through a divorce and it was hard emotionally. funny when i look back, nobody asked me how i was doing or got me any counseling. ugh
counseling really helps. take care of yourself. emotional stress of any kind really makes anxiety kick into high gear so make sure you evaluate anything that might be making you stress and try to get rid of it. exercise is great.
and panic attacks don't last long but they can make you FEAR having another one and that is what is called Generalized Anxiety Disorder. you anticipate having more anxiety and that's what happens. the mind is a very powerful thing. the more you focus on it, the more your mind will play tricks on you.
keep posting on your results and progess.

Yeah CP, I am so glad to hear that you are seeing a therapist...hang in there, it does take some time to see results, but it is worth it so be patient!
I am sorry that you are still struggling with symptoms. I also get dizziness, and I hate it! I really recommend breathing exercisese for those times when you are dizzy, as it may help to relieve this. Sometimes it is caused by hyperventilation, which can happen when we are anxious...and we aren't even aware of it, until we are dizzy:p
Here is my favorite breathing exercise:
The Divided Breath:
Think of your lungs as having 3 equal parts: the top third, middle third, and bottom third. In one continuous breath, but divided into 3 parts, fill first the bottom and pause, then fill the middle/pause, and finally the fill the top third and hold if possible for a second or two. Exhale in the same manner, but reverse. Let out the top, then the middle, then the bottom third of lungs-remember to pause slightly after each part-finally pushing all the air out of the bottom third of your lungs to complete the cycle. Don't worry if you can't manage the whole cycle at first, it will get easier. The pauses will get more controlled, and you may be able to hold the breath for 3-5 seconds before the exhale, eventually.
This will prevent rapid/shallow breathing (hyperventilation) and put you in control of your breathing again, until your anxiety levels drop, and it becomes normal/automatic again:)
Give this a try and see if it helps any.
Talk to you soon,
S.C.
