Hi, yes it can and have been there many times. Hyperventilating is the worst feeling but there are many things that can help to prevent it.
It starts with shallow breathing, not taking full breaths into your diaphram. Usually I get a warning sign like I start to sweat and get light headed.
What I do is put my hand on the top of my stomach, take a big deep breath and you will fill your hand move up, you will also know you are doing right .....then you hold for the count of four, slowly let out for same, just keep doing and concentrate on it. Repeat this and practise it works for anxiety and panic.
At worst if you cannot slow breathing blow in and out of paper bag...I always carry one.
If at home stand infront of a fan, it helps you feel like there is air to breath.
I have suffered this for many years and it takes practise....but know you dont have to get to that point and it wont hurt you ever.
Hope I have been some help
