6 years ago when I first started to see a Psychiatrist for my mental health issues I was on Ativan 4 mg per day as prescribed by my PCP. He had come to the point where he admitted that he was out of his league prescribing ADs and Benzos so he walked me over to see the awesome lady who now works with me on all my mental health problems and meds.
The first thing she did was wean me down and off of the Ativan. I used the Ashton method and if you look at the weaning chart for Ativan substituting Valium for the wean you can see where I started. I pretty much followed the program as written.
To start with we had lowered my dose of Ativan to 3 mg per day and then used withdrawal from Ativan 3 mg daily with Valium substitute plan. ( 3mg of Ativan is approximately equivalent to 30 mgs of Valium).
It took approximately 6 months to get down to 2 mg of Valium which I still have for prn use.
I did not suffer any withdrawal issues as I went slow and my Dr. let me decide how slow I wanted to go. I have nothing but good things to say about this slow weaning plan and I was determined to make it work and it did.
Good luck to all who are trying to wean off a benzo.
