Your question is a good one...and sometimes hard to determine.

It is my understanding that medication helps with the severity and symptoms of anxiety, but it will not be able to eliminate it completely from our lives...nor should it!

For instance, the expample that you gave, seeing something at the bottom of the pool that you mistook for a person? You had better have a bolt of anxiety in that situation...after all, it could be a matter of life and death, right?

Now, if you were able to effectively calm down, rather than have a huge panic attack after realizing what you saw was just a clothing item...then your medication is at work.

Or if you are having more good days than bad, with a decrease in your general anxiety and symptoms..then your meds are probably working.

Have you also looked into therapy as a way to treat your anxiety now that you have your medication dose where you need it to be? In my opinion, it is a great long-term treatment plan...and works really well for many, in combination with medication.

I hope that this answered your question. It can be frustrating and confusing to deal with the issues that anxiety throws at us...but keep up the good work, and keep posting, it does help.:)

Great response from SC - she is very wise.    It feels to me like your med is working as you are handling the anxiety better.  SC is right, medication will not take away all of the anxiety but it will help you.  I used to be on the sister drug to Amtripilyne and it worked well for me for 10 years..............I have major depression/anxiety........and then it just stopped working.  I have yet to find a better drug. 

Therapy is wonderful as well as having a psychiatrist to work with meds.  Many people find they can be med free once they are able to learn how to deal with their anxiety and I hope that you will be one of them. 

Reading this post I could relate to what you were saying so I hope you stick with us as we know where you are coming from and what you are going through.
