Most people having nocturnal panic attacks said that
waking up in the middle of the night feeling extreme and unexplained fear is an
experience that they find difficult to deal with. It is a terrifying and
stressful experience, and after it has passed the person suffering from such
condition will be restless and unable to go back to sleep.
People who suffer from anxiety disorder are
distressed by nocturnal panic attacks because it is not only frightening, but
it also stresses out patients because of lack of sleep.
Panic attacks at night are just the same as daytime
attacks. The two conditions have the same symptoms such as: rapid and painful
heart palpitations, shortness of breath, trembling and shaking, chest pain,
sweating, and numbness in the limbs. A patient suffering from nocturnal panic
attacks could also have feelings like choking or being smothered and a sense of
unreality or detachment from one’s self.
Through proper medication or cognitive behavioral
therapy (CBT), panic attacks at night could be managed with lasting relief.
Patients treated with CBT will learn to change the way they think and could
properly address the fear that is triggering their attacks.
