patR,Welcome to HealingWell and please know you have come to the right place to find support and understanding from our wise and caring members.
I think what you may have is nocturnal panic attacks which many people experience.
Nocturnal panic attacks tend to cause sufferers to wake suddenly from sleep in a state of sudden fear or dread for no apparent reason. The duration of nocturnal panic attacks tends to be less than 10 minutes, but it can take much longer to fully calm down for those who experience them.
Relaxation techniques and stress reducing techniques such as meditation and breathing exercises can help immensely. A natural proven way to relax and reduce tension is through regular exercise. In addition, preparing for bedtime and having a pre-ritual such as relaxing, taking a bath and having a calming beverage before sleep can ease tension and anxiety.
Many of our members have this very same problem so I know you will be hearing from others soon.
Kindly,
Kitt
