Antidepressants and alcohol-setback

Hi all,

I was wondering if alcohol is causing these problems for me. Over the weekend, I attended a wedding and consumed alcohol for two days. Ever since Sunday night I have been struggling with typical anxiety and depression symptoms. I take 20 mg prozac everyday, even when i drink. I am really trying to stay positive. I don't want to get out of bed, and I just want to sleep. I keep having anxious thoughts. I have been trying to implement positive coping mechanisms such as exercise but it really hasn't helped yet. I am attributing this setback to possibly the large amounts of alcohol that I consumed over the weekend.

Yeah, you can get a double jeopardy effect form alcohol and SSRI's.

One reason is that the SSRI exacerbates the alcohol's effect...leaving you vulnerable to being more intoxicated than you normally would be...and giving you the mother of hanovers!


The other, is that the alcohol will render the SSRI less effective, thus making your A/D more pronounced.

The worst of both worlds, right?

Get rest, drink a lot of water and eat nutritious food. You should feel better soon.:)

Thanks so much, everyone, for your supportive comments! I am hoping that these symptoms pass soon. I have just got to be strong in the meantime.
