Hi There,
A few years ago I experienced muscle spasms, though at the time I wasn't feeling particularly anxious. First it was my right bicep that was twitching nonstop for about
3 weeks, and then I started getting random twitches--eyes, left thumb, cheek/lips, thighs, etc. My GP was going to refer me to a neurologist, but bloodwork revealed that I was low in potassium and I was anemic, in all probability secondary to my UC. I started supplementing as directed by my doctor, and gradually the twitching went away.
Progressive muscle relaxation is great, but to be on the safe side, I would also suggest a full blood work up. Deficiencies in potassium, magnesium, and calcium, among other things, can cause muscle twitching and cramping, so it's important to rule those out. Also, there is some suggestion that deficiencies in these areas can be linked to mood, so all the better reason to find out!
