drinking on lexapro

The first thing I asked my doc was, "can u still drink on the weekend?" His reply was "you can drink on this medicine." I don't drink 2 or 3, more like 10-15 if its a day load during football season with a few shots peppered in here and there, so I just want to know if this can be life threatening. I don't really care to hear from people in AA with life lessons, or people who don't care for drinking in the first place who want to sound holier than thou or want to act like people who enjoy to get a little drunk are bad people. I want some honest feed back from people who won't add snyde comments because their idea of a good time is reading from their kindle in Starbucks. I'm a 29 year old hard working person who likes to let my hair down once a week and have some drinks...any input?

Thanks, I appreciate it. Supposedly there is no chemical interaction with lexapro (ssri) and alcohol. The main thing I have read is that it can alter the drugs effectiveness because alcohol is a depressant. I have read so many postings tho (mainly from non-professionals/hypochondriacs with no credentials) and also people who are just anti-alcohol who say this affects liver and possibly heart/breathing), but I did not see these on the side effects pamphlet that came with the drug. It only said do not drink, alcohol is a depressant. Wouldn't they be more adamant about the danger and say listen, this can be lethal, if it indeed was. Many people drink in society, so one would think/hope this is the case...

Welcome to the forum good to meet you this is a topic that comes up a lot and members will always have different opinions regarding this topic but it is always good to hear all the opinions and then you can make up your own decision on an informed basis.

I used to take Lexapro and found it to be a good medication I have also taken many other AD over the years at times I have drunk a lot of alcohol whilst taking these medications to the amounts you were talking about in your post. Most AD do have interactions with alcohol and you should follow what it states on the leaflet that comes with the medication or what your doctor has told you.

I have had problems with alcohol over the years and used it to self medicate when out socialising due to crippling anxiety and did not have any problems on the night. The problems arose at the end of the night and over the coming weeks, Each time I have done it I was violently sick at the end of the night and extremely depressed for about two weeks after so you do need to be extremely cautious.

In my personal view and from somebody who has drunk the amounts you mentioned on AD I would advice not to drink that amount as it is a big risk and not worth the after effects. My pdoc has always said a few drinks should be fine but it is best to avoid alcohol.
