Hi mmouse,
You have had some really tough situations to deal with, and my heart goes out to you.
Emplyment and money issues are at the top of the list of stressors...so know that a lot of what you are feeling is to be expected.
That is not to say that you have to continue to feel bad...just that your reactions are normal.
There are things that I have found helpful in anxiety management, that I hope you find give you relief as well. However, you may have to try several things until you find what works for you as an individual...as these techniques are not one size fits all.
My number one and number two tools for anxiety and panic are breathing exercises and postive mantras.
The breathing exercise that I will post for you is the only one that really helped me...but there are many (see Resources here) and you can see which is good for you.
The Divided Breath:
Imagine your lungs as having 3 parts. The bottom third, the middle, and top third. On the inhale fill the bottom third first, then the middle and finally the top third. Make sure that this is one continuous breath, but divided, with a slight pause in between each third. Hold the breath in for 3-5 seconds if possible. Exhale in reverse. First blow out the top third, then the middle, and finally the bottom third of your lungs until all air is expelled. (remember the pauses) Repeat several rounds for a toatal of about
10 minutes. Practicing this every day will not only give you control and structure to your breathing, it will strengthen and loosen the thoractic muscles, allowing better, more productive breathing, and relieving the chest tightness!
Mantras are also great medicine for my anxious mind. The words we tell ourselves have power...so when I am feeling anxious and suffering physical symptoms I often repeat this to myslef"
"I am okay, this is just anxiety making me feel this way."
Even though I didn't believe what I was telling myself at first...I kept it up, and it eventually sank in.
Keep posting with us as well. Support is very important, and we understand and care here!
Talk to you soon,
S.C.
