Buspar for anxiety?

Hoping to get some feedback from anyone who has taken buspar for anxiety. My doctor prescribed it to me a couple of weeks ago and I have yet to take it. I was hoping to get over this anxiety hurdle without using medication. (Not because I buy into any stigmas that go along with that type of medication but because taking medication is one of the things I get anxious about.) Anyway, I'd just like to hear from anyone who has taken it before. Did it help? Did you still feel like yourself while talking it? Side effects?

I have been on Buspar for many years. It is NOT addictive like the benzos can be. You will not notice any immediate results as far as your anxiety goes, as is true of antidepressants too. But as it builds in your system, it will help the anxiety. It is an excellent complement to whatever antidepressant you may be taking. As to side effects, I never had any. Any med can have side effects, but if it should, all you do is stop taking it. I'm on the max dose of Buspar and am glad to have all the help fighting anxiety that I can get! I ope this reassures you! :)

Hi there,  I use Buspar and have not felt that it did not work however, I have had the dose bumped up once. I take 20 mg in the morning and 20 mg in the afternoon.

I did notice the difference when my dose was increased from 10 mg to 20 mg.  I seems to enhance my antidepressant.

It is a drug that has been around for a long time and often prescribed for seniors as it doesn't wipe them out like some of the benzos would.

Thanks for the responses. I am not taking any antidepressants. The buspar would be taken solo. I am always reluctant with medication like this. I don't want to have that zombie effect, you know... "No, I'm not anxious, but I'm also not happy, sad, excited, angry, etc. either." That's what I want to avoid.

All Buspar did for me was help lessen my anxiety. It didn't make me feel weird or anything else, just calmer.

Littlefoot a lot of our problems come from a chemical imbalance either in the brain or some other place, all
these medicines are available to try and bring the balance back, they also have been trial and error but
all the people before you were part of the experience that the doctors use to find something that will bring
you back to a more normal place. Buspar is a good medicine it will not hurt you, if you go to a doctor for
advice and help, "Why not listen to them"! Peace

I took buspar for a long time. I only took 5 mg. twice a day. I didn't notice much but I never upped my dose because it made me a little woozy some days for about 20 minutes after I took it. and I was also having issues with ductal yeast infections too and I could not take that with Grapefruit Seed Extract that helps with that.

I also read that you shouldn't take for more than 6 months at a time online. I think I kept getting panic attacks and thought why should I take this if it isn't stopping them. I should have upped my dose but like I said it made me kinda woozy after I took it for a little while. every drug affects everyone differently. now I just take half a klonopin when I need it which is a few times a month. helps me a lot.

I just had a bad experience with Paxil (took it for three days, had horrible side effects and discontinued it - I am still having bad side effects and had to leave work early today due to them) and am going to ask my doctor about Busbar when I go back this Tuesday. I read that it inhibits dopamine, a chemical that can be involved in anxiety disorders, while increasing serotonin. I also read that it is intended to be used for only 3 weeks or so, but have heard that many people take it for years. I'm a little confused about that.

I have a fear of taking medications, as well. It doesn't make it easy to deal with your anxiety when you harbor that fear! I've made the decision to trust my doctors and take what the prescribe, as I must get better or my life won't be worth living. That's how I've had to look at it. :)

Buspar did not cause alteration in my mood so if it is working you should only notice that your tolerating anxiety better.
