Deep breath...
What exactly did the dentist say? Did he show concern, or just express that this is really not his place to diagnose anything at this point?
A dentist is really more trained in treating issues with the teeth and gums, so just because you have gotten a referral, does not mean that you are dealing with something bad.
I know how hard it is not to worry right now. I understand, and would probably be feeling the same way...however, that is because I am wired up the same way...not because I think that there is reason for you to be worrying.
For now, try and compartmentalize and hang in there until your appointment. Stay distracted and don't let the intrusive negative thoughts keep playing in your head. When one comes up, repeat this mantra:
"It's not time to worry about that now."
You can't change any outcome with fretting, and you will just wear yourself out for nothing. (when you find out all is fine)
Do you have your appointment yet? Let us know so we can be there to support you
Hugs,
