My son is 12 and has issues in school. His behavior specialist said today after calming down from being upset he went into the bathroom twice within 10 minutes. She said when he came out he smelled really bad. I realize 12 year old boys have a lot of hormones that can cause bad body odor but he takes showers and uses deodorant. She suggested anxiety may be the cause. Is that a side effect of anxiety? I suffer from anxiety myself but don't have that symptom. Any advice is welcome.

Hi S.W. and welcome.

I have not heard of this as an anxiety side effect. The only thing I can suggest is that it could be the result of nervous perspiration. Does he use deodorant? If not, then it is probably time to start. If he already does, then maybe he needs the kind of prescription strength type...which actually can be bought OTC. I think it is called Certain Dry?

As a former 12 year old boy, thats when I entered into puberty, boys can and do stink, my Mother told me
one time I had to quit carrying goats under my arms. It's the hormone thing and some of us have a more
difficult time than others, I am starting to get better but I'm almost 72. Peace

Yeah I remember I smelled really bad at that age too. Also for what it's worth, I remember my mom telling me I had a "unique stench" when I'd be going through anxiety bouts when I was younger.

my brother smelled so bad i couldnt bear to be in the same room with him. thank goodness hes alright now, hes 23 now though, but yeh those teenage years, awful. does he shower daily? i think its important for teenage boys especially to shower daily and then put on underarm doedrant after showering, that is the best time to put it on, alot of people make the mistake of putting it on during the day, or when they notice they start to smell, but by that time, putting on deodrant just does nothing but smell like bad smell mixed with deodrant. the bad smell just as bad as before. My son is 7 so im not quite there yet, but iam not looking forward to the teenage smelly years.

I shouldn't tell this on myself but back in the 40's and 50's it was not uncommon to go nearly all winter without a bath or shower. I lived in a remote area and we all went to a one room reservation school, no one' had indoor plumbing. We were practicing for a school play and the piano player was a beautiful girl from town. they turned up the furnace due to the cold, and we were all around the piano singing, God she was pretty She turned around and said with the prettiest blue eyes "I smell something dead". I thought I would die because I knew it was me. All of 13 and smelled dead already. After that I got up every morning and got my Grandmothers grannet pan it was about a foot deep and two feet around, I would boil water and carry it to my bed room and start with my head and work down, I dam near froze to death that winter but I never did make anyone look for a dead body again.
