I just wanted to know if any of you lose weight when you are going through anxiety, depression? I'm really down in the dumps and I have loss of appetite usually in the morning then through out the day it gets better. My mornings are a killer for me. Can anyone relate?

I can go both ways when my anxiety is up; I'll either eat too much or too little...not sure what determines which way I go! When my mornings are jittery, I have a hard time getting breakfast in, so I keep a powdered nutritional shake in the cupboard. A scoop of it stirred into some almond milk goes down easy and the calories help mitigate dizziness to an extent.
Sorry you're down; hope you pull out of it soon. I'm in a bit of an anxiety whirl, myself, and am looking to get to a more chill spot!

Thanks for replying. Just looking for some reassurance. I know I'll pull through, it just stinks when you worry so much.

Hi R.P.
Yes, when my anxiety was at its highest, I did have trouble eating and lost weight that I could not really affford to lose in the first place...
I recommend getting some meal replacement shakes such as Boost or Ensure and sipping on them throughout the day if you can't tolerate solids right now.
These will give you the calories and nutrients you need until you can start eating regularly again.
Keep working on your coping skills to feel better!! :)

Hi there,
Yes, I also lose weight when I'm very depressed and anxious, my stomach turns so hard to eat.
I make sure I drink protein shakes or as S.C. says, Boost and Ensure are good too, at least you know you're getting something good down.

Yes! I used Boost/Ensure when I have trouble eating. I take vitamins too. It helps.
Mornings are killer for me too as cortisol levels in the body are high. My panic/anxiety subsides to a dull roar by afternoon/evening, usually.
But take the drinks or try mixing your own. One less worry!

Anxiety affects us all differently, but depending on 'how' its manifesting, yes, some types of anxiety can cause me to not eat (which drives down my blood sugar like crazy because the way I eat, I just simply do not eat many carbs or sweets or bread)....this is where fruit can be your best friend.
A homemade smoothie is lovely. The prepackaged nutritional shakes are something to consider, at least to get you started.
It's extremely common to lose your appetite as the internal jitters take over. You're not alone!

Heyy Ripleygirl11!!! I have anxiety and it most definitely affects my weight and appetite!! I find that when im having a panic attack, my stomach can't handle food whatsoever. Unfortunately, I'm a little too underweight at the moment, but i know what helps me is drinking high calorie shakes, smoothies, or as many ppl above have mentioned, ensure or Boost. Good Luck and know that you're not alone in this struggle!!!

I have been through that also. I, like others who responded, went with ensure shakes to get some nourishment in my body.

I have morning anxiety also. If I lose weight I think I have some disease. I'm pathetic.

I lost 5 pounds a couple months ago when I got a routine mammogram, and they kept calling me back for more tests which increased my anxiety and panic 1000x until they did a biopsy on me, and I was terrified.
Stress will make you lose weight!
Also, I have never been able to eat breakfast, ever. I have also had depression since I was a girl...

I've had depression/anxiety/panic since I was a small child (before school!!)
I also went both ways, depending on the type of depression I was experiencing,....(manic highs and lows result in different behaviour
s.) I would go days w/o eating (but still drinking my exorbitant amount of water no matter what).....and sometimes I'd sit at home and stuff my face.
I no longer suffer from depression, but I do have anxiety and panic. Took me years to get over and get through this, but I'm here to tell you it can be done, in particular if you are willing to do the work!

I always lose my appetite when I have anxiety or panic. If it goes on, the weight flies off. As soon as I get it under control my appetite returns.
I too would wonder if I had a disease if weight fell off me suddenly..ugh

I have heard of people that eat too much while under stress, I never understood that cause my stomach just shuts down. I only eat a lot when I'm happy.

When I'm anxious, I completely lose my appetite and can go for quite a while without eating. If I try to, I'll get sick.
So yes, I understand that.
These are times when you need to take very good care of your health. Make sure you take a multi-vitamin (basic, ordinary, nothing special, just to cover your bases), and at the very least, try to drink a shake like Ensure or something similar. Or better yet, make your own.
Try to get some nutrition into your body!
