Effexor and weight gain

Hi!

My doctor just prescribed me Effexor for anxiety. I was wondering if this drug causes any weight gain? In the past I was on Celexa and then Prozac and gained a lot of weight and I do not want that to happen again.

I have been on effexor in the past for 10 years and now I am back on it again and have never gained weight from it.

I think each drug effects each person differently. Some gain and some don't. Just got to try it out.

I also heard the side effects are pretty bad...is this true?

I"m on it now, started a couple months ago, although I take a low does still,37.5. I don't remember any side effects starting it.

I've noticed a drop in GAD since starting it yes. I'm suppose to up my dose on my next appt, but it got cancelled and isn't rescheduled until march 31st so right now I'm hoping a up in dosage will make the anxiety even less.

Any SSRI can have start up effects in the first few weeks of taking the new Rx.

However, using coping skills and riding out any initial s/e's can result in finding a med that will ultimately perform well for you.

I'm just really scared to begin the medication while I'm away at school because I remember how awful the start up side effects for other medications were.

I understand...that would be a challenge.

Do you have Winter Break coming up? This could give you a week to hopefully get through the biggest adjustment period.

The other thing you could do is take a Fri and Monday off of your classes. This long weekend would be the next best thing...

...or possibly even wait until Spring Break?

Our winter break passed already:( and spring break isn't until the middle of march and I planned to go to Florida with some friends but now I honestly don't know if I can even make that. I don't want to be anxious the whole time and ruin everyone's fun. I also don't know if I can wait until spring break to start the medicine. I might start it this week and go home over next weekend

Yeah...you may have to play your Spring Break by ear...

...but at the same time, think positive! You may do just fine without a rough start up at all.:)

Use the coping skill links from our Resources, and try not to anticipate negatives.
