I am new to this site but I have been suffering from major depression and panic disorder since I was 17 I am now 36. My dr has had me on Xanax for 12yrs and put me on 40mg of Prozac for about 2yrs.. I recently had an episode where I did something and don't have any recollection of it,caused me to have sucidal thoughts and a nervous breakdown Just curious if anyone else has had bad side effects from these meds..

I am sorry to hear this. ..it sounds very frightening and confusing for certain!

We're there any other substances involved...alcohol or a sleep aid for example?

Is there a chance you could have doubled your benzo accidentally?

Finally and most importantly, does your prescribing doctor know of this episode...and what was his/her thoughts on this, and advice on how to proceed and stay safe?

Do you have a support system and plan in case self harming thoughts return?

Your safety is priority number 1...and I apologize for all the questions, but want to make sure you not in jeopardy.

Please give us a little ore info if you don't mind, so we can better understand your situation and help.

I'm so sorry to hear of this. Scaredy Cat had some really important questions that would help us to help you. It could even be that it was just you and not the meds that did this to you. You could have had some type of episode unrelated to the meds.

Anxiety does many things to us. Forgetting something is not uncommon. While in the midst of all the anxousness our brain has so much to take in, it totally makes sense that you could not remember something while in the midst of it.

I've bee n there, where you are. I had a complete breakdown about 7 years ago.
With counseling and medication I am getting by. It is the skills of mindfullness that
have helped me the most. Repeating to myself that this is just anxiety, it is not going to kill
me nor am I going crazy. I have to tell myself this over and over again and eventually I get through it.

I hope you feel better real soon and do post again. Maybe we can help some more.

Thank you for replies..My doctor is aware of this episode and she decided to refer me to a counselor and psychiatrist..I don't drink alcohol or take anything except for Motrin or Advil on occasion..I have been doing research on Prozac and Xanax and I was not aware of all the side effects you could have or I would have never taken it.i also don't understand why my doctor would have me on Xanax for 12yrs when it is suppose to be a short term medicine..I know it is gonna take time to figure all this out and get the right combination of meds just really frustrating because one minute I will cry over anything, the next minute I can be fine, or I will be really frustrated and everything gets on my nerves..

I am glad to hear of your referral...I do recommend a psychiatrist, specifically, as this type of doctor is quite knowledgeable in both medications and behavioral issues in regards to anxiety!
