I have been on the generic for Zoloft since July 25th, approx. 5 1/2 weeks. I started at 12.5mgs for a week and went up to 25mgs for 2 1/2 weeks. I just took my 6th day of 50mgs. The first 3 days on the 50 were rough with the 3rd day being the worst. Anxious and very, very, very tired. (I am also on Klonopin .25 3x day). Is it possible that I could already be feeling better? The last 2 days I have just felt better. I am still somewhat anxious at times, but not as depressed. I wouldn't say I am back to myself at all, but I just feel better. I have heard you have to be on the therapeutic dose for 4 to 6 weeks. Should I expect some kind of relapse????? Thanks so much for your help!!!

Chele,
Everyone is different...so the magic number of 4-6 weeks at your therapeutic dose is going to apply to some, but not all people.
You could very well have turned the corner already...so try to just stay positive and in the moment!
Neither anticpate a downturn...
...nor be suprised if a not so great day does come along.
You are in the process, and the results are not always linear...but you are moving in the right direction it certainly seems!
Keep using your coping skills as well...even during good times...this is when they can really be practiced effectively for when and if you need them at some point.
Congrats...enjoy feeling better, and keep us posted!

I agree completely with SC! Everyone is different. And never anticipate a downturn! I've been on Zoloft for most of 18 years (!) at various doses and have always found some improvement within the first week of starting or increasing.

Thanks so much for your replies. I am still dealing with some anxiety even with the Klonopin and I have had a couple ups and downs during the day. Dont think I am quite there yet, but I am glad for at least some relief. I have also found that I need to keep moving. If I sit down, I start to fall asleep. Most people have told me they get insomnia on Zoloft, but it knocks me out. I will wake up usually around 4am with the racing thoughts, but as soon as I can get them to quiet down I am back to sleep. I can remember praying for the day that I could sleep and struggle to get out of bed. After over 4 months of not sleeping it does feel good, but I just hate the dopey feeling. I am praying that goes away also. Thanks again for your comments.

Hm, I haven't heard of Zoloft making people sleepy but I have sometimes had phases where I get incredibly sleepy at 3 or 4 pm and I'm not sure why. Hopefully it is just a phase for you too. Or maybe it has to do with the timing of the Klonopin? When are you taking that?

I take .25mg of Klonopin, one in the morning, in the afternoon and before bed. The drowsiness did get a little worse when I increased to the 50mgs of Zoloft. My third day after the increase I sat on my couch from 4pm to 9pm. I literally did not want to move. But it hasn't been that bad since. I am just trying to keep myself busy and moving. Do you take your zoloft in the am or pm?

Always the morning. currently on 150mg. My mom is on 50mg and she initially took at night and couldn't sleep bc too wired.
Did you start the Klonopin the same time as the Zoloft? When I have taken a benzodiazepine, it has been Ativan, and I can't remember what the slight differences are. I will ask a friend who takes it if it makes her sleepy when she takes more than once a day. Just my opinion, but I do think that it might be more likely that it's the Klonopin contributing to the drowsiness.
Btw, back when I first started, I also had anxiety with some depression, and the dr told me the depression would lift first and the anxiety would take a little longer. So I know how it sucks... Hang in there and day by day you will improve. It feels endless, I know, and I'm sorry. It's the kind of thing that no one wants anyone to have to experience. :(

Also, if you are finally sleeping more, I bet your body is adjusting to that - and just like with kids, 'sleep begets sleep' - you would think that sleeping more you would just feel better, but your body is craving more and more sleep because it's like WOW! FINALLY! So sleep when you can, IMHO. ;)

I did start the Klonopin with the Zoloft to offset any panic. I had tried Lexapro and had a panic attack for 23 hours straight. It was the worst ever. I literally thought I was dying. I have taken Ativan but I guess the Klonopin last longer so you dont get the rebound anxiety which is why my Dr prescribed it. He also wants me on it the 3 x a day. that scares me. I am so afraid of what will happen when I try to go off it. I have heard horror stories about
that. I do not see my Dr again for 6 weeks so I will be on it a total of 11 weeks. I've heard the longer you are on it the harder it is to get off it. I do believe some people take Klonopin for sleep so you are probably correct.
If it's true the depression lifts first then I still may have some time to go. I do feel better! But I still have bouts of depression and despair throughout the day. I am sure it has to do a lot with my situation, but I am really praying it lifts soon. I just got done with my daily crying spell. But I used to have many crying spells throughout the day, so that is a plus.
I agree with the sleep thing. I am sure my body is as happy as I am. I also didn't eat for a couple months and lost 35 lbs in 2 months. So my body has been through the wringer so to speak. I am trying to eat healthier and exercise. It's just hard to get motivated!!
BTW, did you start out on the 150mgs? How did you know that was the dose for you?

I started out on 25mg for two days then 50 and kept going up every couple weeks to 150mg I was having obsessive health anxiety and insomnia and crying fits :( I had lost my appetite too. Which never happens, lol.

Also, i know you don't want to hear this, but it very well may be that the fact that you are still having anxiety means that you need to keep increasing the Zoloft. And for me, once I got on the right dose of Zoloft, no more Ativan. And like you, I was soooo scared about
withdrawal and didn't want to take it every day because I was afraid I was hooked :( but some of that is the anxiety talking to you!!! ;)

Did your anxiety go away pretty quick when you got on the right dose? Also did you take the Ativan every day? Was it hard to come off of? One more question....I promise...lol! Even though you were taking the Ativan how did you know when the zoloft was actually working?
Thanks for all your help!!!!!

I lied, one more question ;) Did you just know one day that it was working or was it gradual?

lol! I always have tons of questions too, so no worries! It has always been gradual - don't worry, that doesn't necessarily mean slow! But it's not like one day there was a complete change. But at some point you realize you aren't counting the hours to your next pill, or even that you don't think you need to take it. :)
And I have had several rounds of experience with this - because life has its ups and downs and I have tapered off several times and then gone back on. Sometimes I felt better within days, and sometimes it did take weeks or months of days that still had rough patches and times I needed to stay busy.
A couple questions for you 😉 is your doctor your regular doctor or a psychiatrist? Also, do you have a counselor? I can also recommend some books that might help if you like to read. With almost 18 years of experience having 'superpowers' 😁 I've learned a lot.
One rather simple thing too - are you taking any vitamins or supplements? Anxiety and depression can be intensified by deficiencies, and there are some supplements that many people find helpful, magnesium and omega 3s for instance.

My dr is a psychiatrist. I have had anxiety in the past. At times it has been really bad. to the point of not leaving my home. After I had my last daughter I had the anxiety with OCD. But I overcame it and that has been years ago. In March my husband walked out one night and moved 4 hours away. It has been the worst time of my life. I couldn't eat or sleep and I just fell apart. I couldn't work and experienced severe depression for the first time in my life. I went to my regular doctor and he gave me the lexapro. After that experience he told me to see a psychiatrist. I have been in therapy since late April. We were trying to do this without meds, but she thinks I need to revisit some abuse in my past and heal from that. We started and the panic attacks came on strong. So I finally gave in and decided to try the meds. It's probably a good thing since I now have court dates to attend, my husband wont talk to me, his parents or our children. He wouldn't even come to our grandsons birthday party. Our anniversary was last week and I texted him and he won't even respond. So having the meds is obviously not taking away my problems but is helping with the symptoms. I did at one point start taking the magnesium. I was having horrible night jerks and that really did help but it seemed to make me more depressed. I haven't taken omega 3s, except through my milk. I've heard that taking supplements with anti depressants was not a good idea. I guess they can interact?? I would love to hear your book recommendations. My daughter works at the library and could probably get them for me.
So now I have unloaded my life story on you....sorry about
that. I guess to just help you understand what I am going through. I am hoping that I will not be on this forever. I have heard that therapy can really be a big help. I'm also praying that my husband will get over his mid life crisis and come home. But once again will not solve all my problems. Life can be pretty tough.

Chele,
I am so sorry to hear this.:( Much of what you are going through was triggered by situational things...naturally!
The hard part however, is that the anxiety and depression have a tendency to stick around.
It is great to hear that you are using the tools you've learned in therapy...
...and now the Rx available to you, in combination, to feel your best and find recovery....and you will get there!
We have excellent book recommendations in our Resources as well...check them out...
...or let me know what you need to work on specifically, and I can post direct links here for you!
You are wise to be careful of interactions between any prescript
ion meds and supplements...
...but some are okay. If you have questions, always ask your doctor, or even pharmacist was is safe.:)
Keep posting with us! We care and understand, and will be here anytime you need someone to listen.

Hang in there, W2b - how many days has it been? That wired feeling is certainly part of the process whenever I've increased doses - go for a walk, stay active, keep plugging along... It'll smooth out soon!

It's the worst. I get it both as a side effect of meds but also as part of my anxiety.
Out of curiosity, why did the dr switch you to Effexor and why adding Zoloft back in? At one point I was on both Lexapro and Zoloft but then when I was pregnant in 2012 I was switched to Zoloft alone.
