Hi CB,
Xanax (a benzodiazepine) is usually taken for panic attacks and acute episodes of anxiety.
If you are dealing more with everyday, GAD anxiety for example, you are more likely to benefit from a different kind of medication.
Most common dialy maintenence meds are in the
SSRI classification.
S
NRI's are another similar type Rx, which work on different neurotransmitters in the brain.
There are also
tetracylic antidepressants and aminokeytone A/D's...all differing on the effects on the brain's chemistry.
Beta blockers are another class of meds that are sometimes prescribed to control the more physical symptoms of anxiety such as increased or irregular heart rate, sweating/blushing...
(as well as many other Rx's that are prescribed 'off label' to treat anxiety/panic)
Consulting a P-doc (psychiatrist) is likely your best bet for finding the right medication for you. This is a specialized doctor who will have the greatest knowledge of psychotropic meds and their effects.
Wishing you the best in finding what will be the best choice for you!
