Older I get the worse I'm getting...

I'm a 63 yr old female who set up her first physical in five years. I've been a wreak thinking about going for the blood test. I went this morning and had it done. I am beside myself right now!! I'm worrying about multiple myeloma, leukemia or any kind of blood disorder. Since knowing people who have been diagnosed with these illnesses, I am at my wits end. I look up statistics, what the chances are, etc. Even though some of them say your average person has a 0.7% chance of getting diagnosed with these, most say between the ages of 65-75 which I'm in that age range now. I wish I could be like my sister who goes for her blood tests, walks out the door and doesn't think about it again. I obsess, worry, can't sleep, feel sick, can't eat, etc. It's a terrible way to live.

Hello Lin,

I totally understand how you feel. If you have a little tendency for health anxiety, any form of test/check up etc. will bring you lots of stress.
Currently I am going through a change phase as a female, and having a little bit of messed up hormones obviously. Every single small symptom (and because of the common belief "around 40 yrs old age health problems start"... which is a wrong belief) I freak out and so scared of visiting dr to confirm that actually I am healthy.

If you have been taking care of yourself and your previous check ups were OK, then I say you really don't need to worry too much. Just when you get good results with your test, cherish it with your loved ones.

Hi lin and welcome to the A/P!

I am sorry you are currently going through this worry. I completely understand, as I have been dragging my feet on my own check up for simialar reasons!

One way to distract your mind from the worries regarding the results is simply by using a postive mantra.

"It's not time to think about that now."

...is a simple, yet powerful statement full of truth.

It is not time to think about your results presently. You will likely get good results...you can't do a thing to influence the outcome either way...and you can't hurry things up by fretting! :)

You simply must wait, and stay postive...because at this moment all is well...and that is where you need to stay...in the present.:)

Let us know about the goods new when you get it, so that we can celebrate with you, okay? :)

Hello, I also understand your fears. I hate any medical tests and my anxiety is thru the roof waiting for the results. It is very stressful, I stress myself out for days. Then the call comes and I'm fine and life is good again. My sister can go for all kinds off tests and doesn't bat an eye, as so does my husband. I wish I was like that.

Hi Lin, I hope you are doing well today! I just went through the same thing with tests. It's nerve wracking but all that worrying for nothing.....all turned out fine!!! As I'm sure all will be well with yours too! Hang in there and keep us posted.

Thanks everyone - I saw in my email that my test results have been posted on MyCharts but I haven't looked. If anything is high, low or red flagged and I saw it I would be ten times worse!! My dr appt is this Thursday so I'm still fretting like crazy and having terrible days. Thank you for you concern, it helps to know others care who feel the same way. If there is one thing I could snap my fingers and change about me it would be my health anxiety - it can be dibillitating.

In my experience and my husbands, if anything is off with your tests our doctor doesn't have it available on MY Chart until she talks to us.
