Awful Anxiety after Benadryl

Hi everyone!

I am new here, but thought I'd reach out. I have been dealing with GAD and OCD since the age of 15, now 28.
It has gotten worse as I have gotten older. Any who...I took benadryl last night and today I have been very shaky and my heart rate has been pretty high. Has anyone else had this issue? sad

Hi Steph,

Welcome to the forum!

Are you on any type of medication? I find that if I take Benedryl while taking benzos, I get some crazy interactions (they cancel each other out).

Steph, they typically just make me sleepy and I might experience a bit of a tiredness hangover from them the next day.

Cat, I didn't know they cancelled each other out! Wow.

Benadryl makes me insane, shaky, totally uncomfortable, etc.

a low dose usually dosnt bother me much but it can make me edgy sometimes if i take too much

Cat,

I am currently taking Paxil and Xanax...
My anciety just felt alot more intense today after taking 3 benadryls yesterday, I was very shaky, on edge, and my heart rate was pretty high, well it usually always is but higher today.

Hi Steph

Welcome to the forum but sorry to hear you are dealing with anxiety.

I find it is always best to check with your pharmacist before taking OTC medications to see if there is any negative interaction with your medication you are taking. I have heard that Benadryl can cause anxiety and it was my understanding that you should just take one tablet per day.

Hi all, day two after the benadryl, still shaky and heart rate still a little high...I am now wondering if this is my ocd and anxiety making me think it was the benadryl...Im restless and not sleeping...

Yes, I think the antihistamine should be well clear of your system by now...

...but of course triggers and anxiety can hang around unfortunately...and it sounds like this might be the case. The Benadryl was the catalyst, but now the anxiety is carrying on the effects.

if you're drinking caffeine, that might be a factor too. Do you drink soda, tea or coffee? Chocolate? Those things make my heart rate speed up and also causes anxiety. Antihistamines make my heart race a bit too.

I do dtlrink caffeine but try to limit my intake, I am also a smoker which is not in my or my anxietys best interest but I did stop drinking completely about 2 years ago, one of the best decisions I've ever made. I didnt have a problem, I just didnt care for the way it made me feel and how it effected my anxiety.
