Advice on easing off Temazepam

I was perscribed Temazepam last week for my Insomnia and was instructed to take it for one week. I know you guys aren't doctors but I wanted some advice or an opinion from somebody who has done this before.

Should I stop taking it cold turkey or ween of it? Is it safe to just stop? I was taking 30mg for just a week and took 15mg last night. I'm just afraid of having any withdrawals.

Last night was weird. I felt more anxious and found my thoughts to be very strange/random and sometimes make no sense at all. Like the words would be in the wrong order or I'd go from one thought to the other and they wouldn't even be related. I wasn't sleeping yet and totally aware that I wasn't making sense after the fact. lol is that something to do with the medicine or am I going crazy? I'm taking Lexapro 10mg for my anxiety too. I'm about a week and a half in.

Hi AF,

Your prescription is in the same family of other meds (benzodiazepines) that DO need to be weaned off of carefully...

...so your question is valid! However, I doubt if one week on the low dose you were prescribed is going to require much if anything in terms of a step down in dose.

Call Your doctor to be sure...but I am sure you'll have no issue.

The confusion you speak of that you experience d last night...was this when you were fully awake...or just as you were drifting off?

If it was.the latter...you can be assured this is normal. It has happened to me often. The in between time just before falling asleep is indeed a strange state to be in.:)

I hope tonight is a good one for you with great sleep. Keep working on your coping skills...and be patient with your start up. Things are going to get easier with time!

The doctor said to just stop after one week and only take it as needed. I haven't slept without medicine in almost 2 weeks, so I'm a bit nervous. Contemplating if I should try the Hydroxyzine again tonight (I've tried it before and sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.) I'm extra amped up today for some reason. Is it normal to be obsessive about stuff when first staring a drug like Lexapro? I'm having a hard time doing anything or thinking about anything besides how I'm feeling. I've been anxious about stuff before but since starting Lexapro I've become obsessive which is really only making me more anxious in the end.

And I was definitely awake however I could have been starting to drift off. It definitely made me go *** though. lol

Yes, starting an SSRI can be rough.:(

The body detects the Seratonin that is introduced through the new Rx...and temporarily decreases it's own production (in a nutshell) leaving you vulnerable to increased anxiety...

...until therapeutic levels are reached with a few weeks.

Hopefully you can use your coping skills (see our Resources!) to help you manage the anxiety...

...and start to feel better soon.:)
