I posted a reply to cymbalta update but thought this was an important enough topic to create a separate post. Not sure if there are any other posts about it but here it is anyway.

 just wanted to chime in and tell you about something that really helped me. I was on Citalopram for a while with issues then they tried to put me on Cymbalta and went through some major side effects. My doctor finally recommended something call GeneSight testing. This is a simple DNA test, swab the mouth and send it in to this company www.genesight.com. check this site out but basically they will take your DNA and test for the best green zone medications antidepressants anti anxiety and even pain relievers which would best work for you. There are also yellow zone and Red Zone medications which do not work for your makeup and guess what that's what I was on originally. Once they put me on the right medication green zone wow did a lot better. I'm now in the middle of converting from Nortriptyline an old tricyclic to Effexor which is similar to Cymbalta, it's an snri extended release. The first few weeks were difficult I admit but it's starting to kick in just a little and I'm hopeful at least. Bottom line all doctors when prescribing these kind of medications need to get this test done for everyone, we're just not guinea pigs out here. The key is getting the right meds for your genetic makeup. TRS

GeneSight testing is definitely a good thing! Unfortunately, it is expensive and not covered by all insurances...and doctors are not going to absorb that cost, though that would be nice!

It is still a fairly new procedure, so perhaps with time it will become more readily available, or common practice among prescribing doctors.

I am glad you were able to get it done, and therefore find a good med for you! :)

Here's some pricing info for GeneSight testing, not as bad as most people think:
Medicaid does pay for it.
If your insurance does not cover it then the maximum you will be responsible for is $20 if your income is under $50,000, must send first page of tax return, if your income is between 50000 and 75000 it will cost you $150, if your income is over 75,000 it's $330.
They just need proof of your income for the above prices to workout.
So for most people I think it's affordable and well worth the report you get, very professional they've added many other types of medications to the report since I took it. I believe it was very helpful for myself and my daughter in finding the right medication.
