Reinstating Prozac from Paxil

So after 9 months off of 14 years of Paxil use, I am considering reinstating because the severe anxiety bouts are proving too much. My doctor is suggesting Prozac. Paxil had pooped out on me the year before and was getting reactions like short temper and confusion.

Anyone have any knowledge on getting on Prozac in this regard? How low of a dose will my system handle? My doc says to start at 10mg, but I've read that is too high for someone who is in withdrawal like myself.

Would love to hear what others have to say.

Hi Toulouse,

I think your doctor has chosen an Rx for you that is going to perform similarly to the Paxil, but is different enough to be effective, since you experienced the cease of efficacy...

You are not in withdrawl so to speak after all this time...but rather in a rough spot with returning anxiety challenges...so I do believe the low and slow approach that your doctor has you on is the best step.:) You will have an easier time reinstating...with less chance of start up issues.

Prozac is a good medication I started with 20mg and had no problems so I hope it works well for you.

Thanks for the input. I will decide soon what to do after I talk to another dr for a second opinion.

i have heard paxil is one of the hardest to get off. prozac is very easy to stop

Yes, Paxil is the hardest to come off. I am nine months off and after suffering numerous waves of symptoms, I'm finally being hit with intense anxiety, which I never had pre-Paxil. This is the first symptom to make me throw in th towel on my recovery, which is really saying something. If I get on Prozac, it would only be to stabilize (6-12 months) and then taper off.

prozac helped me get back on an evenkeel after zoloft fizzled out but left me with terrible withdrawl symptoms. 3 months of prozac and i stopped no problem at all. didnt even have to taper. just stopped cold turkey

I had a nightmare getting of Paxil I had to get the liquid version and go down to one drop a day it took me about 4 months to get off it the only other AD I have had difficulty getting off is Cymbalta.

@super20dan, when you got on the prozac, how high or low did you start out on? My doc wants me to do 10mg but I am afraid it might be too high for me. I seem really sensitive to supplements so I'm afraid of a bad reaction by introducing too high a dose.

i started on 20 mg. would have liked to have tried the 10. dr insisted i take 40 mg and it was too much, prozac is a pretty strong drug so try as low a dose that works for you . make shure you take it in morning as soon as you get up. if you take it at night you wont sleep most likely.
